Default 12 mile high ash cloud over Indonesia

The Mount Sangeang Api volcano (near a small fishing town in the West Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia) has spewed out a 12 mile high ash cloud

The ash has reached the lower atmosphere where the temperature is -70*C

    to put it in perspective

~ the shard (tallest building in the UK) is 0.18 miles high
~ burj khalifa (tallest building in the world) is 0.51 miles high
~ mount everest is 5.49 miles high

The volcano sits in Indonesia's notorious 'Ring of Fire' - an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. It has 452 volcanoes - 75 per cent of the world's total.
