It seems that the higher the number ltd is with caterpillars the more its worth... i haven't paid particular attention to this in the past is this a common trend with this item or something temp...

It isn't reverse, they aren't the popest rare for collectors, they are pop for people who thinks "OMG, It's a caterpillar, so cute, I want it" then people overpay them.
