Helping someone....

I have been put in an awkward situation by my boss at work. A colleague is facing eviction at home, he lives in a YMCA and I have been asked if they could stay with me. Well really, I don't even like the guy at all, he is rude, when I call him to come to tills he doesn't seem to want to help out there, so why am I gunna want to help him out? I feel for the guy because I used to live in the same place and was also evicted, but I've got my own place now. If the guy in question was even slightly nice to me I would consider it, but I myself could get in trouble if he does come and stay.

I don't want to help him at all but how should I say no. It's my boss that's asking me and I feel like if I say no that would go against me.... So yeah. How do I say no to this without sounding rude?

Just explain that you would get in trouble. And I'm guessing you're working in a supermarket part time? I'm sure it wouldn't be the end of the world if it went against you. As long as your turn up for your shift on time and do your job, he has nothing on you. (Talking from experience).

If he's not nice and you're not friends you have absolutely no obligation to. Even if he WAS nice and you WERE friends you have no obligation to. No matter who asks. End of the day it's your PERSONAL space which you pay for (I assume he can't afford a place to stay), and you have absolute authority who enters and leaves that space.

Maybe tell your boss something like "I do feel really sorry for him but I don't have the space right now / wouldn't feel comfortable offering him a place to stay with me". They can't force you to, and I'd hope they understand that. If they don't, just ask yourself why can't your boss offer them a place to stay? If they're so desperate to help, they can offer instead of almost bribing an employee to.

have they asked other colleagues or just you? seems like they're asking you cause they think you'll give in to any demand. nah, stick up for yourself. like laura says, u have absolutely no obligation to allow anyone into your home and if the boss cares that much why dont they offer him to stay at theirs? if it goes against u then that is crappy management and you should prob find a different work place.

You need to assert yourself and say that you don't want someone you don't know living with. If your boss is so concerned why doesn't he let him stay at his own house? Stand up for yourself!

I have already tried explaining no, but now he's saying to me to think about it. I have to explain to the assistant manager tommorow .

Prob illegal for you to sub-let or have a tenant anyway so go with that angle, although frankly your bosses shouldn't be asking you this at all anyway let alone making you explain your reasons to them for something completely non work-related. If they like the guy so much they can take him in, ridiculously unethical of them to be doing this to you
