Default Do you believe in thin privilege?

Thin privilege refers to the belief that being thin is more advantageous in society compared to being fat.

Here I have some TAME excerpts from the thin privilege tag in tumblr (which I should note is all from fat girls. Fat males are not allowed to moan about their fatness because apparently being a male of any size or race makes you less suspectible to oppression than being a woman):

-Thin privilege is when the doctor does not assume you are diabetic or have high-blood pressure every time you’re sick.
    - Thin privilege is knowing you're going to fit into all the roller coaster rides at an amusement park
    - Thin privilege is going into a store and finding clothes that adhere to you, whilst fat people get a small section for them. It is not having to google for clothing shops that adhere to your size then paying extra for your clothing
    - Yes all woman deal with body issues and shaming but open up a magazine and you'll see your thin glorified everywhere
    - Thin privilege is being assumed you're in good health by the wider society.
    - Thin privilege is being able to eat in public without people watching you
    - Thin privilege is not being told you will look better at a different weight
    - Ladies, if your man wants you too skinny - very, very skinny - he’s not your husband: he’s your gay friend.”

now if you're thin like myself, you're probably shaking your head at most of these points:
#1 I'm assumed to have problems when i go to the doctors. I am weighed. My blood is taken to see if I have thyroid issues, despite the fact I am never at the doctors for my weight. I'm asked if im eating properly.
#2 I'm sure that's for safety purposes. I can't fit in to many roller coasters or rides because the seat safety gear isn't tight enough to keep me in.
#3 I have to pay an extra £5 at my bra store so I can get a smaller band size. Clothes never fit me properly and don't adhere to my body. Just because I'm thin does not mean I have the same body shape as another size 6/8.
#4 thin bodies are assumed to be anorexic. Thin bodies are just as often pointed out as fat bodies. I'm thin but my body type is never portrayed in the magazines, it's usually girls who are clearly having issues with their mental state. It's offensive.
#5 again, always been assumed to be anorexic or bulimic.
#6 I have people watch me eat or people say 'is that all you're eating' or 'oh that's healthy' as though I should be eating crappy foods to put on weight and eating vegetables means I'm worried about my weight.
#7 I'm always getting told I'd look better with a bit more meat? Ive literally been told by guys they would fancy me more if I was bigger.
#8 all my boyfriends have been gay, ****!

Obviously I have no idea what it is to be a fat woman in society. However, I'm sick of being told my body shaming does not compare to their apparent oppression despite the fact the sole reasoning for my bullying was for being skinny. My weight is commented on when ive met new people and even strangers in the street. I assume people who know me don't do it anymore because they've seen me eat.

I followed the fat activists on tumblr for a while and was inspired by them, saying all girls should love their bodies and each other until a pop song comes out catering to their body, then thin girls are told to 'stop crying' because we are privileged in every day life. & what about fat privilege? doesn't being fat show that they are rich enough to eat what they want? i was brought up by a mother who came from a poor family who found it difficult to put food on the table everyday. my mum brought her eating habits to us and we were brought up on the essentials and no more. I can't say it's genetics as my family members who moved into rich families are now bigger, as my dads side has always been. Basically, I am thin BECAUSE im underprivileged (poverty).

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS. do you think thin people are privileged? do you think one body shaming is much more disastrous consequentially than another? it's probably a controversial subject and be seen as fat bashing but im not bashing bigger people, id just like to point out the hypocrisy of 'love your size unless you're skinny' feminism. Thx.

It sounds like a very vain and self-absorbed concept if you ask me, again, something tumblr excels at.

Here's an idea. If you are fat then stop eating so much and go on a diet. If you are thin then eat more. Of course there are some exceptions to this, such as disabilities or conditions - but for the most part that's what it appears to be to me. I'm incredibly skinny even though I eat a lot, although I know if I ate more I would put on weight.. and if I noticed I was dangerously thin then that's exactly what I would do.

And this matters WHY? I can't believe people actually spend time thinking up this stuff. :S

Time for them to all to get off the computer, stop eating cakes and chocolate and go on a diet. Take some ******* personal responsibility.

    Market forces.

The more popular an item, the cheaper and more economical it is to produce. Just yesterday me and my mum were looking at buying some new internal doors, and noticed that the larger doors cost more than the smaller sized doors (exactly the same make too).

The only way to solve would be for everyone elses prices to rise to subsidise the larger/thinner sizes... but why should they?

im so skinny i go into shops and nothing ever fits properly.

despite that, privilege tends to be about perception. What in society is perceived to be superior and I would say that being thin is generally seen as better than being a lardass but that doesn't really have to undermine the eating disorders of those on the other end of the spectrum.

Just being pretty in general. You aren't gonna get a job in hollister or abercrombie if you are fat. Things like x factor, if you are good looking you stand a better chance imo. If you are fatter, you barley get like any clothes shops to go into, not many make plus sized clothes.

well obviously i'm also thin, i don't think i look unhealthy but maybe anyone who's met me can vouch for that

thin privilege is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard, if you're fat you can change that
you might have to work a bit harder than another individual but so what, if you're going to complain about it then stop moaning and go about changing it.

i can't find sizes because i'm so small, jeans fit my hips but not my legs
i don't whine about this, i do my best to try maintain/gain a bit of weight to improve these problems

girls in school said that i had an eating disorder and that i pretended to like pizza to cover it up, if i'm at a restaurant and order a salad i can feel all eyes on me ASSUMING i'm ordering it to watch my weight

I'M SORRY THAT I FIND SALAD ******* TASTY

basically what undertaker said, if you're overweight and unhappy try your best to lose the weight, it is possible
same goes for if you're underweight and unhappy, try gain it. i've struggled the past 2/3 years to gain weight but that's just because i fail at eating enough, it's my problem and i'm not blaming it on any medical condition like SOME PEOPLE

to me it just seems to be fat people hating on thin people out of jealousy and nothing more.

Thin privilege is when the doctor does not assume you are diabetic or have high-blood pressure every time you’re sick.
I assume thin people get the other end of the stick when they go into the doctors.

Thin privilege is knowing you're going to fit into all the roller coaster rides at an amusement park
How is that a thin privilege, it's a privilege of anyone who isn't obese enough to be too fat to ride a rollercoaster

Thin privilege is going into a store and finding clothes that adhere to you, whilst fat people get a small section for them. It is not having to google for clothing shops that adhere to your size then paying extra for your clothing
Stores always have and always will cater to the most popular sizes, otherwise it's a waste of time for them if theres hardly anyone buying it. If you're too skinny there won't be stuff your size, if you're too fat there won't be stuff your size. That's life. If they want to go to a shop go to ones that specialize in fat/thin people (all that comes to mind is jacamo cause that advert, but i'm sure there's plenty of shops that cater for thinner/fatter people)

Yes all woman deal with body issues and shaming but open up a magazine and you'll see your thin glorified everywhere
Because being morbidly obese isn't attractive nor should any magazine show it to be.

Thin privilege is being assumed you're in good health by the wider society.
Thin people probably get more comments regarding their health than fat people tbh, as it's quite obvious the fat people are eating plenty.

Thin privilege is being able to eat in public without people watching you
I wouldn't watch anyone eat, much less a fat person stuffing their face.

Thin privilege is not being told you will look better at a different weight
But they do get told that, so wrong.

Ladies, if your man wants you too skinny - very, very skinny - he’s not your husband: he’s your gay friend.”
lol what, some guys might be attracted to super skinny girls, same as girls sometimes attracted to skinny guys. this makes no sense on 'thin privilege' a it's basically saying you can't get a bf because all guys who like skinny girls are gay?

My point still stands, it just seems like a bunch of fat girls on tumblr throwing a tantrum because they're jealous. Don't post **** on tumblr, go eat less **** and lose the extra 10 stone, job done.

uhh no i don't believe in it, it makes no sense at all. and i feel the same way about fat privilege's if that exists lol

shaming someone for being thin is the same as shaming someone for being fat. it has nothing to do with anyone but that person. and as long as they're happy and healthy it shouldn't be a problem for anyone else. people need to learn to love their body without shaming other body types in the process. don't even know if any of this makes sense but i think i know what i mean

being comfortable with ur body is attractive, no matter ur size!

Lol crying, did one of the fat ppl on tumblr write that?

Also I will add that this is the most ridiculous thing that I've ever heard...

I am skinny and have had it just as bad, if I had a pound for everytime someone asked me if I was anorexic I would be a millionaire lol. I wouldn't call looking like a 12 year old boy a priviledged when I am coming up to 22 lol... I have tried to gain weight but it doesnt work and I eat properly... I put it down to genetics and fast metabolism
