Alex Salmond to quit as Scottish First Minister

Alex Salmond is to step down as first minister of Scotland after voters decisively rejected independence.

He will also resign as leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) after the "No" side won Thursday's referendum by 2,001,926 to 1,617,989 for "Yes".

The national split of the vote was 55% for "Yes" to 45% for "No".

Mr Salmond said: "For me as leader my time is nearly over but for Scotland the campaign continues and the dream shall never die."

Oh been watching Daily Politics and this question was brought up but it was just assumed he'd stay and push for the further devolution promised. At least he bows out as a principled and passionate politician.

Huh? How has he not resigned? The title of the thread seems perfectly fine for me. I'm also quite surprised that he's resigned.

I checked Wiki which said he's resigned and BBC, apparently he's to leave office in November following an SNP leadership contest.

Either way, he's out of the door now.
