Queen Elizabeth II: New Coin Portrait of Her Majesty Unveiled

    - New image of the Queen to appear on all coins this year
    - Britannia also to be re-added to coinage after removal a few years back

Jody Clark, Royal Mint engraver and designer of the new portrait and Adam Lawrence the Chief Executive of the Royal mint, unveil the fifth definitive coin portrait of her Majesty the Queen, at the National Portrait Gallery, London.

The portrait is the fifth of the 88-year-old queen, who will overtake Queen Victoria as Britain's longest-reigning monarch in September, to appear on coins since she came to the throne in 1952, and the first since 1998.

The new portrayal, which shows Elizabeth wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her coronation, was created by 33-year-old Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, whose design was selected from a number of anonymous submissions.

The last Royal Mint Engraver to be commissioned to undertake a royal portrait was George William de Saulles, who engraved the portrait of Edward VII which first appeared on coins in 1902.

Coins featuring the new effigy will go into production immediately.

Glad to see Britannia back on the coins aswell. There's another change coming soon too with the change in shape of the £1 coin.

A sad/interesting thought to ponder though... this will likely be the last image update of the Queen Elizabeth II on the coins considering they're every 15 years or so. The next time they'll be updated will be with the portrait of King Charles III on them.

    Thoughts?

It looks really good - I am really looking forward to the new £1 coin too.

Not really saddened about it being the last one of her, although am saddened that Charles will be the next King (most likely). Really fancy having Prince William on the throne.

    She looks beautiful in that.
I think it is pretty crazy that it's her last one.
