Default Airbus warns investment at risk if UK leaves EU

The European aerospace and defence giant Airbus would reconsider investment in the UK in the event of Britain leaving the European Union.

Paul Kahn, president of the 16,000-employee Airbus UK, said Britain must compete for international investment.

"The best way to guarantee this is by remaining part of the EU," he said.

Earlier, Chancellor George Osborne said in a speech to the CBI employers' group that he wants the UK "to be in Europe, but not run by Europe".

Mr Kahn, speaking to the BBC's industry correspondent John Moylan, said that with a UK referendum on leaving the EU perhaps less than 18 months away, companies like Airbus needed to be at the forefront of the debate.

"I believe that it is vital for a company such as Airbus to come out and make a stand in favour of Britain remaining in the European Union," he said.

Well done to Airbus for coming out and stating the obvious.

No wonder Airbus loves the EU, it was illegally shovelling taxpayers money into the company until the World Trade Organisation (WTO) stepped in.

EU Airbus subsidies illegal, says WTO

Meanwhile the EU has made a similar complaint over the US's alleged support of its rival aircraft giant Boeing. The US called the WTO's decision "a landmark victory", though it is not clear if the EU will appeal.

"Taking into account the nature of the prohibited subsidies we have found in this dispute, we recommend that the subsidising member... withdraw [them] without delay," the WTO said in its ruling. Ron Kirk, the US trade representative, welcomed the decision.
As for "considering investment" in the UK, investment depends on whether or not you'll make a profit not whether Jose Manual Barroso makes your laws.

What has EU membership got to do with making a profit in the world's 6th largest economy and #1 financial country?

One notable example is the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) who describe themselves as “the voice of UK business”. Yet Business for Britain can show that the CBI receives significant funding to the tune of £5.4 million in the last five years.

I know reading is hard but it was George Osborne being quoted, not CBI. They've got nothing to do with this.

The CBI have got nothing to do with this scaremongering campaign? You have to be joking! :Money-Mouth:

Airbus and the CBI have been caught out as paid shills. I don't even need to debunk George Osbourne (a Tory) as his party's record on the EU speaks for itself.

No, CBI haven't got anything to do with an article about Airbus. A basic level of reading comprehension will tell you that.

Another EU thread and @The Don; still can't debate EU membership itself. Instead he chooses - again - to argue over whether I have read the article. I guess that like Airbus and the CBI, he can't actually say why investment would cease if we left the EU and instead just states how we need to be in it. The funny thing is though, that at least Airbus and the CBI are actually being paid by the EU to come out with this ridiculous stuff. He's an unpaid parrot.

The CBI hosted the meeting that the Chancellor spoke in and if you read the article I linked, the CBI is organising pro-EU forces together.

Once again Dan is proving himself unable to follow a simple conversation
I don't know what's more impressive, your tremendous ability to derail any thread, or the mental gymnastics you perform in order to convince yourself that you’re actually right.

CBI haven’t got anything to do with this thread, the only reason they are mentioned in the article is because a quote has been used from a person speaking at one of their events. Unless you have something that links CBI to Airbus I fail to see why you felt it was relevant to derail the thread in their direction. Perhaps if this were a thread in the debates section on EU membership I would bother to respond to your irrelevant questions. Since this is a thread in the Current Affairs section about Airbus warning of the potential of them pulling investment out of the UK if we leave the EU, I’ll leave my comments in response to that.

Then talk about Airbus/EU membership babe.

I'll just save my CBI evidence for when you inevitably post a CBI thread.
