Steven Moffat to leave doctor who

Steven Moffat has announced he is to leave doctor who after series 10, to be replaced by Broadchurch and doctor who writer Chris Chibnall.

It has also been announced that series 10 will air in 2017, with Chris Chibnall's first series airing in 2018. This will mean there will be no series in 2016 apart from the christmas special.

What do people think about this?

I prefer Moffat over Russell T Davies but do feel he's started to go a bit too over the top and think it is the right time to leave. Not sure what I think about his replacement though. As for a year gap, I'm not keen but it will probably be there so he can get Sherlock out the way as I can imagine he will want extra time to plan his final series.

Oh good finally some plots I can understand again. Still don't really understand the point of the Silence to this day :/

He was a fantastic writer but I think he just got too bogged down in teeny tiny details and intricate plot lines that I can just about cope with if I concentrate but I just don't think it's good as Doctor Who is supposed to be a family show and I doubt kids know what the hell is going on when things get too deep.

The problem I have is he overcomplicates stuff. Blink is an amazing episode that plays with time, but I think it works so well because it's a single self contained episode. If Blink was a story arc across a whole series I can't see it working as well.

The silence storyline is simple but it's just been dragged out and overcomplicated far more than it should have. From what I can see The doctor saved Gallifrey and the timelords sent a message through all time and space, hidden behind the crack. The problem was that the doctor couldn't hear the message until he'd actually saved Gallifrey, so throughout all his previous regenerations in new who he believes he destroyed Gallifrey until the 50th when he saves it and his timeline comes into sync.

As for the silence they don't want the time war returning so they go into the past to destroy the tardis and prevent Gallifrey from returning via the crack but actually end up being the people who caused the crack. Their plan b is river song, creating a killer.

It's a bit of a mess and there are inconsistencies but that's basically the plot

Yeah I understood each episode individually but I never got any of what was happening over, say, a whole series.

Another great short one was the two Library episodes because they were so terrifying but again it would have been so bad drag it out like he did with the Silence and the crack in the wall

A lot of his stuff seems on the fly. Like the voice that said silence will fall when the tardis blew up was a completely different voice heard later.

Looking back I like the idea that the silence actually caused the thing they tried to prevent. It reminds me of a classic who story day of the daleks. It has people coming from a future earth controlled by daleks trying to prevent a bomb blowing up a peace conference in the past that lead to the daleks invading.

It turns out one of the people from the future thinking he's helping is the one that sets the bomb of. It's kind of a paradox because a person from the future caused that very future. I think it works a lot better because it's one story and not spread out

lol I've watched all the new who eps but looks like I need to watch it again cos I don't remember any of the explanation that peteyt just gave. Proof that it was overcomplicated!

The latest series worked a lot better. Series 9 had a lot of two parters meaning the stories had more room to breathe and tell a story. While there's plots from other series the main arc is simple and series based as in its not spread out like the silence arc.

The silence arc and river arc make a bit more sense when you put them together it's just that they are jumbled.
