Default 'Many dead' as lorry hits crowd in Nice

A lorry has struck a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the southern French city of Nice, with reports of many dead.

The incident took place on the famous Promenade des Anglais during a firework display, media reports say.

One image on Twitter showed about a dozen people lying on the street, some being tended to.

The local prefecture has urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident "an attack".

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that "a lorry driver appears to have killed dozens of people".

He urged residents to stay indoors.

This is AWFUL - these people are celebrating and get attacked! It's not even racially motivated surely as Bastille day isn't religious or a cultural festival?? THE WORLD IS AWFUL LATELY

@lawrawrrr; Bastille Day is a French cultural day celebrating French history. There's meaning behind the attack, it's an attack on the republic.

One suspect currently at large who was seen with a gun.

I know what Bastille day is I meant more that it's not a spiritual festival that only one group celebrates - these people surely haven't been attacked for celebrating something the attacker didn't believe in (like Ramadan or, just being in a gay club, for example). Cultural was probably the wrong word, I'm struggling to put into words what I really mean but yeah like a particular (secular) group's celebration as opposed to religious festivals/celebrations

Well if it is who I think it is obviously the target is all France - the republic/nation - itself. Like 9/11.

I doubt very much that the attackers identified in the slightest with France, being French or the history of France. We'll see in time.

    holy shit

I'm surprised no one else has picked what RT are tweeting as that's big news (yet). Unless RT have got it wrong and it's not from today.

It seems it's a fireworks accident but than anything else. (Paris)

Don't spread false rumours. No fire to the #TourEiffel. An accidental fire truck took place pont d ' Iéna. It is switched off.
