Incredible, and it's happened so fast. Not wholly surprised since Erdogan hasn't been popular for trying to give powers back to the Caliphate (which is exactly the opposite of what Ataturk did in creating the country in the first place) but wow, just hope it goes over bloodlessly

Wow. Given the history of Turkey this isn't surprising, but it is surprising at the same time.

If I am honest, like Tom alluded to, probably for the best. The government has been sliding towards Islamism for a while now and the Turkish Army like any is there to put an end to it. The true irony though here is if President Assad outlasts President Erdogan.

Beware of the potential of civil war.

There's nothing like a good old military coup.

Apparently they've opened fire on a police station.

Turkish Police and the Turkish Navy are apparently against the coup. I warned of potential civil war.

It'd be a disaster now if the coup fails. Danger that military would be permanently neutered and political/constitutional consequences would follow.

Readng reports now looks like the coup is stalling - important if true. A coup de'tat success depends on speed and slickness of an overnight takeover.

The biggest problem as I see it is that if the coup fails, it'll entrench the power of Erdogan and allow him and his government to put further restrictions on the people. There have already tonight been a lot of media blackouts with social media sites being blocked in the country, but whether that's been imposed by the govt or military remains to be seen. Very sad to see gunfire opening up now in any case

I'm seeing reports saying it has failed too.
