President Biden pulls out of the 2024 US Presidential Election

Pressure on the president had been mounting citing growing concerns over his cognitive abilities

I think this is unprecedented in American history.

I never would have voted for him but on a personal level I do feel quite sorry for him. You look back even four to eight years ago and he was quite a sharp speaker, and compared to now.... plus the fact he's always had presidential ambitions, ironic that when he finally got to the presidency he was in later life when his cognitive abilities were in quite sharp decline.

He's endorsed Vice President Harris but it isn't certain who will get the Democratic nomination, with former President Obama declining to endorse her and former Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, wanting an open primary/competitive field of candidates.

    Thoughts?

Hi lol, you're still here and posting I see even though the server has been awfully slow . Just to update your initial post, since you put it up Nanci Pelosi has now endorsed future President Harris earlier today

This is my favourite (and true) byline I read which I think we will see a lot of in the coming months as one theme:

She (Harris) was also known for vigorously prosecuting sex crimes; she will be running against an adjudicated rapist (Trump).

    [The Nation]

And also like... now Trump is the one that's too old (78?), and also he tried to install himself as a dictator, it's his fault pro-choice is gone, he's xenophobic, and anti LGBTQ+. So hopefully enthusiasm against how crazy Trump is, now along with all the new enthusiasm going on now for Harris will give democracy a victory in November!

Details as far back as 2021 are starting to come out now... it seems the media and the White House/Democratic Party have been hiding and covering up what they have known even as far back as the start of his term in office, that his cognitive abilities were subpar even back then. Quite worrying given the American president is both Head of State and Head of Government in the world's most powerful country.

I hope the republicans keep talking about age because I think it will just draw more attention to how trump is the oldest presidential candidate in history. And I think President Biden looks very good to everyone right now for doing the right thing for the country and choosing not to run. The democrats turned their worst issue into one of their best!

For me, I don't see an issue with the age of politicians - in fact, I think the older the candidate the better given how older people are wiser, more clear-headed and have seen it all before. Britain and the Commonwealth after all had a Head of State until recently who served until she was 96. It is different though with President Biden given his cognitive state is clearly in decline - it's not as if the USA can proclaim a Regency either like we can if the monarch becomes incapacitated or mentally unable to carry out the duties as Head of State.
