Helen Worth, actress who played Gail Platt, retires after 50 years

One of Coronation Street's longest running actresses has retired after 50 years on screen

Coronation Street's longstanding character Gail has bid farewell to Weatherfield after 50 years on the cobbles.

In her final episode, broadcast on Christmas Day, viewers saw Gail marry Jesse Chadwick, played by John Thomson.

Actress Helen Worth has played the character through thick and thin since 1974. The ITV soap announced in June that she would depart with "a major storyline for the Platt family".

The 73-year-old actress has said she felt "truly blessed" about her long Corrie career.

Of the older cast from when I watched it years ago, there's only really Ken, Rita and Audrey left now. And you've also got the likes of Roy, Sally, Kevin, Steve, Eileen, Dev, David and Sarah who are still there and have been for many years.

I always liked it when you had Norris, Emily, Betty, Blanche, Fred, Deirdre etc all gossiping in a booth in the Rovers!
