View Full Version : Mexican flu outbreak

I blame the economy for the deaths of those in Mexico.
"i blame gordon brown and this nuliabore government. it's pc gone mad, not in my day".
We have enough anti-virals, which just about destroy the virus, in the UK to help 35 million people. That's around half of the population of the UK. It's obvious we'll end up giving some up to other countries though.
I can see how it could turn into a Level 6 disease, but not coming at us. I think the UK is possibly the most well-prepared country in the world at the moment, and we're gonna ride this thing out.
The Americas may take most of the outbreak. Europe will go mostly unaffected and the Asians are so hot, they'll just snap their fingers and it'll disappear.

No-one knows everything about this flu, they only know so much.
then how do YOU know this?:
No it doesn't and it will eventually be immune from some medicine...
thats kinda a ridiculous thing to be so positive of, to be honest.
as other people said before, no one outside of mexico have died other than one boy who was from mexico. and we should know better than anyone that mexico isnt exactly the richest and most medically advanced country in the world.
and like i said before, a few dozen people is nothing compared to the tens of thousands of people who die from the ordinary flu every year.

people dont believe it because we've been scare mongered into thinking there was going to be a pandemic numerous times before. just this decade with sars and bird flu.
i think its ridiculous that TENS OF THOUSANDS of people die from the regular flu every year in industrialized countries yet we cause great concern over what is only a potential threat. thats like driving with a flat tire but being worried about running out of gas. if swine flu started killing as many people as the normal flu does every year, people would be freaking the **** out.
btw their disease rating system is as arbitrary and useless as the terrorist threat rating system.
Amen to that take some rep :8
Even though they are saying it's bad and we're in a phase five I still don't feel under threat.

I have been with someone who got back from Mexico 2 days ago and have been off with the flu, my doctor claimed it as hayfever and gave me tablets which don't do nothing. I ring the NHS and they told me to keep off and give it a few more days and If I still have it then to ring again and they will send someone here. Didn't mention it as being the most hated on this topic lol.

Sorry to be a grammar Nazi, but please stop using double negatives! :( And most allergen tablets don't work, different people have different reactions to different allergens, instead of ringing NHS you should have just told your GP that they weren't working that well...stop jumping to conclusions, and you talk like you're a professional, your GP told you it was Hayfever, that's professional advice...and may I ask why you assume it was flu?
Wait. If bird flu and swine flu combine... does that make flying pigs contagious?

Are you being serious?. If your doctor put it down to hayfever, then you clearly aren't showing symptoms of flu. If you had flu, you would know about it. Since you've been posting fine and regularly over the past several days, I doubt it is flu.
When I had flu, it was literally the worst illness I've ever had. I couldn't get out of bed for like 3 days, not even to watch TV or go on the computer.
"A typical flu begins with a headache, chills and cough, and rapidly develops into fever, loss of appetite, muscle aches and fatigue, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may also occur, especially in children."
"When you have a common cold you generally have a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion and throat irritation. Fever is uncommon and you will improve in 2-3 days.
The flu is miserable to have. If you have the flu, usually you will have a high fever that lasts for 3-4 days, a headache and muscle aches, extreme fatigue that may last 2-3 weeks, and a bad cough."

The media are taking the micky out of this and people, especially on Youtube are making stupid videos saying that they they've got swine flu and doing weird stuff with pigs, ect.
I don't think people see how serious this is, there's only a handful of cases which are mostly in Europe. I know there is a couple in the Uk who had it but looked like they no longer have it as they have been discharged from hospital but most people think that this is just going to be a short stint and will eventually go away but it might not and Millions of people may die from this.

the media's ridiculous hype that its "the next black death" FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR outweighs any joke on youtube. sorry to burst your bubble.
the media is capitalizing on this. they're going to squeeze this for all its' worth, just like they did with sars and bird flu. the WHO isnt much better. when bird flu first started gaining hype a few years ago, a senior official there said it had potential to kill 150 million people. its only killed 200 to date.
why arent you complaining about people making jokes about car accidents? tens of thousands of people die in them every year. why not complain about people making jokes about fat people - hundreds of thousands of people die of heart disease and other obesity-related diseases every year. hell, why not complain about people who have made fun of the NORMAL flu which kills tens of thousands of people in industrialized countries every year? hell, people make jokes about AIDS! thats killed millions!
im sorry i'm not freaking out like everyone seems to want me to.

thats the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard. we aren't children. we dont need ridiculous hype and scary stories to be made aware of something. why cant they be honest and reasonable? why do they need to make ridiculous headlines that talk about "panic" and comparing it to the black death, which any person with a sense of logic knows is a ridiculous comparison? 20 reported cases doesnt even come close to the amount of attention it has received.
and no, a few hundred cases is not even close to a "worldwide pandemic," thats a stupid thing to say.

Your attempts at humor are bad and you should feel bad.
While having swine flu they could have died from other causes, old age, heart attack, whatever. It was just an estimate, not an official figure.
Also, I thought there was going to be a pandemic but I wasn't worried. Infact I welcomed it. We never get any "the world might end scenarios in this day and age and it's really boring.

It's only a very mild flu & apparently like seasonal flu, so I don't know what all those people at the start of the thread saying "100s of millions could die!" we're thinking. I guess they haven't learnt the lesson yet from all the other life threatening things we hear on the news like bird flu, SARs, the endless amounts of things that can cause cancer and we should avoid, the credit crunch that will destroy the economy and many conspiracy theories like 2012, 6/6/6 etc etc. :$

SARs was in a completely different league.

In what respect? I was talking about how people thought everyone was going to die and how the media hyped everything up. It is similar to swine flu in some ways anyway, it's a virus, it was a near pandemic, the death rate was higher, and it was contained successfully. Pretty similar in my eyes.

I wonder if he looks into a crystal ball every night or reads palms as a living
I'm sure it's way more advanced than that! :)

They said on the news 'over the next few days', so I imagine they're doing a bit at a time

If that's the child/baby then that's the one that came over from Mexico for treatment, so technically it doesn't count.
What was SARs? I remember the name but strangely can't remember what it was about (shows how much I care about illnesses :P).

@above
very true, and it just shows how much people know about the actual swine flu virus and effects.
I died last week 'cos I had Swine Flu. >_>
Because I went to the local hospital (Not big) and they said it was the flu and told me to rest and If I still had it to call the NHS (Yeah I forgot or GP, depending on the day) so they can come to me. Hayfever isn't sore throat, aching body, sneezing, coughing, blocked nose, headache and feeling nausia all the time..
Seriously, make your mind up, you went to the Doctor, he said it was Hayfever, and now you're saying you went to a hospital and it was Flu? Tbh, I hope it was Swine Flu so you get to realise that it isn't deadly for prepared countries...
The only people who have died are either young (very young), have had other health conditions or their hygiene is really poor.
The only reason people died in Mexico was because they didn't have access to the right drugs. Also, It's more likely to kill you if you have a strong immune system as it turns it against you and the stronger it is, the weaker it makes you, however not many people will die now, if any. The only people outside of Mexico was a woman who was later found to die from other issues that she had before the flu and the baby which went on holiday with it or something.
The only thing I'm worried about now is my GCSE's. If they shut my school we all get our predicted grades, and whilst i'm excelling in some subjects, It would be good to get an A in maths and English haha :P
Everybody in school is like "OMG get swine flu i wnt gd gradezzzz"

A school about 10 miles from mine has been closed for a week because a year 8 pupil has got swine flu and has been in school with it!
