Mexican authorities have closed schools and public buildings in the capital in a bid to contain a new flu virus suspected of killing up to 60 people.
Public events were suspended and residents donned face masks as concern grew over the outbreak.
Health experts say tests so far seem to link it with a new swine flu virus that sickened eight in the southern US.
The World Health Organization's head flew urgently to Geneva to oversee the agency's handling of the outbreak.
Margaret Chan curtailed her visit to Washington to return to WHO's headquarters where an emergency committee would likely convene in the coming hours.
The WHO said it had prepared "rapid containment measures" in case they were needed.
"We are very, very concerned," said WHO spokesman Thomas Abraham.
"We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human. It's all hands on deck at the moment."
The WHO is also sending its top experts to Mexico and the US to work with the local officials.
In the US, the White House said it was monitoring events.
US experts said they were taking the virus seriously and working to learn as much as possible about it.
But both the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the WHO said that there was no need at this point to issue travel advisories for parts of Mexico or the US.

Mr Cordova said the virus has so far responded to anti-viral drugs
Mexican authorities suspect the virus may have been involved in the deaths of about 60 people, mostly in and around Mexico City, since mid-March.
Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said that 20 of those deaths were confirmed to be from the new swine flu strain and the rest were being analysed.
More than 900 other people are thought to have been infected.
Mr Cordova said antiviral drugs had so far proved to be effective in combating the illness and the WHO had not yet advised starting developing a vaccination programme.
The BBC's Stephen Gibbs in Mexico City says the authorities have obtained a million doses of such treatment and are distributing them to hospitals across the country.
Officials said most of those killed so far were young adults - rather than more vulnerable children and the elderly.
On Friday, Mexican President Felipe Calderon cancelled a trip and convened his cabinet to coordinate a response.
Masks were being handed out to residents and reports said the streets were far quieter than usual.
Concern growing
Dr Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC, said that preliminary tests on seven out of 14 samples from patients in Mexico had matched the virus found in the US.
Eight people have fallen sick - six in California and two in Texas - with a virus that experts say is a new strain of swine flu. All eight have recovered and only one was admitted to hospital.

SWINE FLU
Swine flu is a respiratory disease found in pigs
Human cases usually occur in those who have contact with pigs
Human-to-human transmission is rare and such cases are closely monitored
Q&A: Swine flu

Dr Besser said more information was needed to determine the extent of the threat posed by the virus but that "concern has grown" since Thursday as more information has come to light.
He said it was not yet known whether swine flu would lead to a major pandemic but that scientists around the world were monitoring developments and taking the threat seriously.
"At the early stages of an outbreak there is much uncertainty and probably more than everyone would like. Our guidelines and advice are likely to be interim and fluid and subject to change as we learn more," he said.
Both the CDC and the WHO say they plan to send experts to Mexico to help investigate the virus.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease which infects pigs. It does not normally infect humans, although sporadic cases do occur usually in people who have had close contact with pigs.
There have also been rare documented cases of humans passing the infection to other humans.
Such cases are monitored very closely because of fears that a new strain of swine flu with the ability to pass from person to person could spark a pandemic.

Lol, its not the end of the world. Theres always the odd outbreak every year, 60 deaths is a bit extreme to the others but as WHO said, they've sent the best and are ready for the worse. The pandemic part is a bit scary, yeah.

My uncle & aunty are in Mexico City on holiday but has gone to Cancun today since this.

President of Madagascar: "SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN!"

@Voiding: it has the possibility to cause a global pandemic though, with it being a new strain of the H1N1 virus, it's not easy to discover what can cure it with the drugs they have. WHO have discovered that it is a strain of four viruses (North American swine influenza, North American avian influenza, human influenza A virus subtype H1N1, and swine influenza virus typically found in Asia and Europe). They have also found that it is immune to amantadine and rimantadine, but susceptible to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). This doesn't mean that there's a cure for it, which could therefore lead to a global pandemic if people travel out of the country etc.

Awww, if only King Julien was the head of Madagascar :(

This is the first time I've heard of this sort of flu, it serious, but not too serious judging by the article. Hopefully it won't spread and it seems like the Mexican authorities have tackled it well so far (closing schools and so on).

According to Sky News Alerts on right now, but not on website just yet;

A member of BA cabin crew from a flight from Mexico has been taken to hospital with flu-like symptoms.
8 children in New York confirmed to have this strain of the flu.
68 have died from the flu in Mexico.
Outbreak believed to have begun in Kansas.

http://news.sky.com/skynews
www.bbc.co.uk/news (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news)

It should appear on the websites soon if confirmed, however it now seems to be in the following countries;

United States of America
United Mexican States
United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland

Scary stuff, a Public Health Emergency has already been declared by the W.H.O. (World Health Organization), lets just hope if it is confirmed our government closes our borders urgently.

because it could develop into something on a massive scale. The last outbreak was in 1918 and that killed about 100m people. Plus once the virus has developed it could be difficult to cure and treat people as it will just adapt to new changes.

It's worrying that there are so many emergency meetings and they say this.

"World health officials worry the swine flu outbreak in Mexico could unleash a global flu epidemic"

"Once more details are clear about the virus and its risks, the emergency panel could recommend a change in the WHO's pandemic alert level -- currently at 3 on a scale of 1 to 6 -- or recommend travel advisories to control the flu's spread."

Jordy

I wish all these news reports would actually say something of use, all they rattle on about is how 'oooh it could be a pandemic' not much about the actual flu.

So it spreads from human to humans mostly by direct or indirect contact, such as touching, coughing and sneezing.

Once you get the flu what happens to you?
Can the flu be treated at all?
What are the chances of you dying?

No because the last outbreak killed 100,000,000, this is spreading a lot faster and the government won't be buying vaccines for everyone. So if it spreads a lot more then you will likely not be treated.

Thats the point i'm making, out of all the countries in the world our government would never close our borders even if the whole world had it except us. They'd only close it of Gordon Brown or some MP caught it.

• What is swine flu?
Swine flu is a respiratory illness caused by a type A influenza virus, usually of the subtype H1N1, that triggers outbreaks in pigs fairly regularly. It can also be transferred from pigs to humans, from humans to pigs, and from humans to other humans.
Four main virus subtypes – H1N1, H1N2, H3N2 and H3N1 – have been isolated in pigs, though the virus, like all influenza viruses, constantly mutates. When influenza viruses from different species infect pigs, the viruses can trade genes to create new versions that mix swine, human and/or avian influenza.
The swine H1N1 virus is not the same as the human H1N1 virus, so vaccines for the latter won't protect from the former.

• Can humans catch swine flu?
Yes, but it is not common. Usually, this happens to people who are in contact with pigs, though there are some documented cases of human-to-human transfer. Human-to-human transmission is believed to occur much like the regular flu, through coughing, sneezing and other contact. Eating pork does not transmit the virus. The symptoms resemble those of the regular flu virus.

• How can swine flu be diagnosed and treated?
Diagnosing requires a respiratory specimen taken during the first four or five days of infection, to be analyzed in a lab. The virus seems to respond to antiviral drugs, including those Canadian health authorities have been stockpiling in case of a flu pandemic.

• When has it happened before?
The best-known case of swine flu is a 1976 outbreak at an army barracks in Fort Dix, N.J., which sickened four soldiers and killed one. There have been no major outbreaks of swine flu recorded in Canada.

• How is swine flu H1N1 virus different from SARS and avian flu H5N1 virus?
All three come from animals, but SARS, a corona virus, and the avian flu are poorly adapted to infecting humans. As a result, it is fairly difficult for humans to catch either virus or pass them on to others, though the effects can prove deadly when infection occurs.

The WHO stated that the viruses obtained from the human cases with swine influenza in the United States were sensitive to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) but resistant to amantadine and remantadine. So yes, there is probably going to be a cure once they've done enough lab tests.

And the BA cabin crew member, did not have Swine Flu.

Yeah, like Technologic said, Bird flu never mutated, so it couldn't be passed human to human, only from contact with infected animals. But with this Swine flu, it can be passed from human to human, and that is definitely NOT good.

20 to 100 million died. Estimates were 50,000,000 to 100,000,000 were killed then. That took 2 years. So this flu virus could keep going on for a few years.

As far as I am aware, there is a pill you take which will eliminate such threats. It's the same pill for bird flu, though that never arised anyway. The person in the UK got cleared of it anyway, mainly because he never had it. Meh, not fussed to be honest.

Penicillin doesn't do anything to flu, it's virtually useless. I got told this when visiting my GP and the fact I used to take it for 10 years kinda disproves it too. The only thing that gets rid of flu, or at least prevents it, is the flu jab and possibly healthy food high in whatever vitamins it blocks.

Watch the Skynews conference.
What about it? Nothing has been confirmed yet in the countries people have mentioned, they are just suspected cases. If someone outside Mexico dies from the new strain, and it's actually confirmed to be the new strain rather than just 'suspected' (media hype), then maybe I'll be a bit more concerned.

Penicillin doesn't do anything to flu, it's virtually useless. I got told this when visiting my GP and the fact I used to take it for 10 years kinda disproves it too. The only thing that gets rid of flu, or at least prevents it, is the flu jab and possibly healthy food high in whatever vitamins it blocks.

i was using it as an example to show how little medicine had evolved at the time of the last swine outbreak. :P

Yeah but what good is medicine that helps some but not the rest? The rest will just spread it even more...

They have to treat everyone who has it now, which is nearly impossible because loads of people may think they've got the flu but it actually being the H1N1 and H3N2 and won't bother going to the doctors which will continue spreading.

Even the USA aren't stopping flights in and out of Mexico (as said on Sky News). If this was really going to turn into a mass pandemic and kill millions of people, do you really think the USA would allow people to travel to and from the country? When they actually quarantine Mexico, or people start dying in large numbers outside of Mexico, then we should be concerned. Until then it's over the top scaremongering.

Meh, it just means people will demand a flu jab, which won't be possible during spring/summer, considering it's usually distributed during autumn/winter. I can't think of a type of medication that will prevent this sort of flu, other than the one created to prevent bird flu. But we all know that didn't arise to anything :P

They say that the virus will possible evolve, which means they need to make a new cure for it. They estimate 1300 people have it and that its getting faster and faster. WHO statistics arn't fake and they don't make a big thing out of it, they said there is a risk of a global pandemic and yeah, there is no need to panic.

Elsewhere, new suspected cases have been reported in France, Spain, Israel, New Zealand (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/New_Zealand) and the UK.

You pick whatever you want to start, like virus or bacteria etc and name it.
Then when you play you earn points every few seconds to spend on like moisture (better conditions for bacteria etc) and different symptons so it kills people. I have killed 5.2b atm with 1b left.

Funny you should say that because if it is a strain of the H1N1 virus then people with weaker immune systems would be less 'prone' to death than those with a stronger immune system seeing as the virus causes an overreaction of the immune system itself. :8

People are dying all the time from rubbish like this, the only reason this is so big is because it's the first time it's popped up in such a long time and newspapers need storys, the same thing happened with bird flu, get over it, if you die then you die, stop worrying and stop trying to act like you're some sort of expert, you must of told everyone that your uncle and aunt are in Mexico and that flights from NY and Mexico are coming to the UK at least 5 times and no one seemed to care any of the times.

Anyway despite what you all say there is still a genuine worry about Bird Flu, as viruses can mutate, develop and gain imminuity to medicines etc at any time.

Even though the last flu pandemic was about 90 years ago, a similar number of people would still have died if it happened today, as scientists and doctors couldn't keep up with the ever-mutating virus.

The one in spain is confirmed now. However, in all cases outside Mexico, people who have it are only displaying mild symptoms or have fully recovered. So it's not really serious until someone dies outside Mexico/in Europe. It's still way to early to tell if it will become a pandemic yet. I personally think it will turn out to be something very minor. I mean, out of a population of over 100 million in Mexico, less than 2000 have it, and only 20 have been confirmed to have died from swine flu.

Edit: This website shows the current pandemic level. We're only at 3 right now.
http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/phase/en/index.html

"In Phase 3, an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus has caused sporadic cases or small clusters of disease in people, but has not resulted in human-to-human transmission sufficient to sustain community-level outbreaks. Limited human-to-human transmission may occur under some circumstances, for example, when there is close contact between an infected person and an unprotected caregiver. However, limited transmission under such restricted circumstances does not indicate that the virus has gained the level of transmissibility among humans necessary to cause a pandemic."

It's worrying when you have professionals saying this.

"They're also trying to make sure people understand there could be a much greater spread of this virus, and that it may bring fatalities."

So far, the only reported deaths from the infection have been in Mexico, while the cases in the US appear to be milder.

"It's possible that the US infections are among younger people - whereas it's young adults who are more vulnerable," reported Milam.

"That's something which worries scientists because they know the pandemic of 1918 affected largely those in the young adult population.

"It's one of the many things worrying doctors - and why there is such a rush to get some answers."

Twenty-Five possible swine flu cases have been reported in the UK, of which 17 are still being investigated, the health secretary says.I'm pretty sure that within days someone will get a confirmed case in the UK, and I'm sure the media cannot wait but for now, they're all just 'possible' cases and bare in mind the figure is only about 20 people worldwide who have certainly died from this particular strain.

Correct babe, its real life with real lives at stake.

Well now its been confirmed in United Kingdom, so why would we waste time sending our health minister to Europe when he/she should be concentrating on homeland security opposed to the impossible task of stopping the mainland getting it without closing borders. Its pretty bad for France and so on I guess because all of their border crossings have been dismantled.

What do they class as "widespread" for phrase 5; meaning how many people need to have been infected by it for it to move up to Phase 5, does it say?

Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

There you go.

I agree, the world is too over populated. Mexico has a lot of deaths mainly because there are a lot of people there & a good place for people 20-45ish for couples holidays etc and with 20-45 year old people being the most vunerable to this.

But I know its harsh but the world is getting too full and also there are some idiots in this thread. We can decide to by hyped over this if we choose too, if you don't like it then ignore us?

To above: Birdflu was touching birds to get it, this is if you have it and touch somewhere or breathe on someone they will likely get it. So If I sneezed on a surface and you touched it, the likelyhood is that you'd get it.
