bora variant, available in europe, us etc. not available in the UK, only golf variants which aren't that good looking. I really want one though.

^oh thought you were asking if it was a variant of the bora, didn't realise it was actually called the "variant" haha. if i were to have any vw estate it would probably be a new passat, my neighbour has the R model and it's pretty smart.

my babyyy. picked it up on friday i think it was and done 100 miles already oops
it has a few biggish scratches on it but i'ma get them sorted sometime soon, and some new wheel covers because they're all scuffed up.
it should all be nice and really shiney and clean because i spent ages doing it in the morning on saturday, took it work, come out and it's all covered in dust from the bakery but ohwell.

insideee. the seats look browny in the pictures but theyre not really and i needa get a steering wheel cover or something because its all worn

nah scratches are the least of anyone's worry on a first car, plus I'm sure you'll add many more of your own during your ownership! what reg is it, what engine has it got?

i'll add 0 scratches hopefully :( none so far anyway! i went out and tidied up the scratches they tried to cover up this morning and they don't look as bad anymore, obviously still there but nowhere near as bad. then went over to halfords and got some new wheel covers which look sooo much better than the original ones. i'll get a picture later maybe

It's a very, very solid car. I prefer it over the Volvo XC70 anyday. It may be a "family car" but it's going to serve me well over the winter, I don't want to be driving back to NY in the winter in a car without some sort of traction control and apparently the AWD system in the Subaru is amazing. Overall, I wish it had more options but the sound system is great and the fabric seats are really growing on me.

- Totally standard bumper but with a splitter added (either from Fabia VRS or Megane, not sure), plus 3/4 size plate

My favourite car of this thread so far!!

Loving the flared arches and alloys! The little one litre engine is great on fuel and also pretty nippy with the car being so light, combined with the handling (especially with the bigger wheels you have put on) it must be a fantastic little car. I really want one as my first car but with it being inevitable that I will have a few bumps being a new driver and probs a bit of a boy racer it is hardly the safest car to be wizzing around in. Just wondering but do you know if roll bars offer better protection in head on or side on impacts?

anti roll bars are for handling, so if you want protection, then get a full cage. not a cheap ebay one, a custom built one, which will set you back a lot. Don't get a mini as your first car, because they're cool n' stuff, but if you're worried about crashing it, it's not really the car. Fair enough, it's not as safe as you might think, but it's not really fair to ruin a quality old car.

This thread has made me want a mini as my first car even more. If I did get one I would put in a 6 point roll cage so it is much safer. As you can see by this picture it would withstand a head on collision much better with the cage there. The bonnet may crinkle up like a pancake however at least I wouldn't have a steering wheel in my chest.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t22/Demon-mini/rally%20car/IMG_0194.jpg

However I wouldn't have mine looking as "raw" and exposed inside.

Yeah I stupidly told them, Skyrocketed my insurance.

Before I told them about the Seat The insurance was only £1200 but then once I crashed the seat I thought i'd better tell them about the cage. x

Oh so would they insure a 17 year olds first car if it was a 1 litre Austin Mini Cooper with a 6 point roll cage, no other mods?

9y
25-09-2010, 11:16 PM
yeah.

I've sold this to my friend who is now learning in it. Not sure how much his insurance is.

there was a bit of a discussion about the crumple zone because the whole inside has gone, theres just pedals and steering wheel. That didnt really do anything to insurance but did make me think x

Yeh always wanted a mini as my first car but they crumple in like crisp packets. Really unsafe little cars so a 6 point roll cage and perhaps frame strengthening bars would be a must. Would have a little power boost to compensate for the added weight but my insurance company wouldn't be hearing anything about that... It's funny because I actually have the cash to buy one now, it's still just over a year until I am on the road but I'd like a project.

If you've got the cash you might aswell. I did that, I had this a few weeks b4 i started driving it and got a really cool cutout bonnet for it

Was it you that was working on a corsa, put some flared arches on and painted it orange? I think it was a corsa anyway, was a while ago that I read all of the thread on the forum you posted it on. Think it was you anyway. :P

Are you a terrible driver or just have amazingly bad luck? :P

Also tell me about your mini, did you have to tell your insurance company about the roll cage and if so was it the roll cage that made it really expensive to insure?

^ nice start you've made there, defo should colour code all round and get some spacers, maybe even some diff. alloys? my mate had a minted red ph1 a while back

Ahh thats Stu's aint it, bought his side strips and mirrors off him. Yeah im getting the door handlds done today and the bumpers when weather is bit better. Going to smooth the bonnet over too and might buy Stu's smoothed boot off him too if ive got the cash.

Im getting a mint set of the current alloys ive got now later on and getting them sprayed up in either white or black with red detailing on them.

Sorting the boot install today so il get some pics of that up too.

Yeah plan was that he would bring it down here to his brothers as its just down the road from me lol but then his brother went without picking it all up. Only thing about the bootlid was the popper bit, that put me off slightly as it would have to be potching with more wires etc :P

Ahh it was you, I completely forgot who it was. They have been working well so far :P most reliable part of the car id say.

Was too rainy today to spray up the door handles or even clean the car :( spent ages cleaning it last week and then one of the boys decided it would be funny to lob eggs at it when he was pissed. Next morning woke up, saw the mess, decided to lob load of eggs at his car and topped it off with a bag of flour in the radiator, laugh on his face soon dropped.

But now ive got messed up bits of paint because the egg was left on there overnight :( will need a long detailing session on Friday if the weather is good :)

Gonna start working on the engine now. Can't be ****** with a loud exhaust, induction kit makes a nice sound anyway. Cam and remap it when save up enough pennies hah. Clean the engine bay a wee bit.

my friend just bought a passat wagon that originally came from germany (the old owner imported it) and it's got the oddest options.. it's a 6-speed tdi, it only has driver and passenger side front power windows and rollers in back yet it has factory alloys, climatronic in the front.. it also doesn't have a sunroof? almost every jetta i've been in, with the exception of one basic jetta GL didn't have one but it also didn't have a/c or power anything..

my dad has been looking into getting a new style jetta but the dealer told him he pretty much has to take whatever trim comes in if he wants a particular color, and he has to take whatever color comes in if he wants a particular trim.. they're flying off the lots and the auto port isn't releasing them.. do you have the redesigned one over there yet? thoughts?

We are getting the newest style of Jetta here, but to be honest, it's still the uninspiring, bland old "fade into the background" shindig that it always has been.

Trading in the family Q5 today and getting our new Volvo XC60 delivered next week, got sick of Audi's crap customer service. Obvious problems that they claimed didn't exist for example and after the **** build quality of our Q5... well, we won't be going to Audi again.

Surely it's the one dealer in particular you had problems with? Did you not try a different one?

It's not the dealer in particular, but their bad CS was the last straw, here's the list of problems we've had with it:

- Oil level indicator constantly shows as full, clearly isn't, had to force dealer to give us a dipstick (it doesn't come with one)
- Wiper arms rubbing against bonnet edge, caused paint damage, was fixed
- Lining in passenger door split couple of weeks after new, fixed
- Driver door handle trim falling away from window switches, fixed
- SatNav consistently tells you to turn left on roundaboats, you'd be going round in circles!! Still not fixed
- SatNav seems to make up it's own language when reading street names, barely understandable, Still not fixed
- Engine whines, dealer can't find an issue and so not fixed
- Boot won't shut with switch (it's electric), has to be manually forced shut then reopened, not fixed
- Steering wheel squeeks a lot when moving at low speeds, not fixed
- Front parking sensors detect something in the way, blatently isn't, tried cleaning, not fixed
- Parking brake (electronic) doesn't engage or disengage properly fairly regularly, still not fixed, potentially dangerous
- Clutch judder, smells literally after 5 seconds when holding from minor > major road, dealer can't see the issue and so didn't fix it

All this and the car we bought from Audi before the Q5 was literally dead the day after we bought it, they had to pick it up on a transporter and replace the whole damn thing.

Latest pic of mine (New wheels as I needed 4 new tyres anyway and it worked out cheaper to get these alloys with fresh decent rubber on them!

Alloys are gash and flaking but im going to sand, prime and spray them up in black :)
