Is there no way of protecting houses/bridges/forests from fire instead of just banning flint and steel completely? I know it would mean a tiny bit more effort for everyone to make sure their stuff's protected, but I'd prefer that to no flint and steel at all.
I would probably attempt some humorous word play involving banning tools (people) and not tools (actual tools), but I'm too lazy.

Important Announcement

First things first, donations WILL be refunded.

I have decided to stop running this Minecraft server. When me and Dan first started it, it was fantastic, but ever since Hey0 took a dump on us things have gone downhill, so here's the story:

So after the laggy-as-hell VPS experiment we got a dedicated server out in Germany... but now we can't pay for it. It's a German company who won't accept PayPal, who's system doesn't like the CVC security code on cards so only accepts certain types and cant take a bank transfer easily from the UK. I have searched and searched around for a dedicated hosting provider in the EU that will take VISA and/or PayPal for £45 - £50 for 4GB RAM with no setup fee but we have to face the fact that £50 won't cover that, we need something more like £70 to go with a decent company (provided there are no setup fees there either...).

Secondly, Hey0 left us in the dark with the 1.2 update, he said he'd update it one last time and he didn't, Bukkit didn't even attempt it (I know they say they did) and their system is still too early on in development to be stable and lastly kMod (a fix of hMod) is too buggy for use. Since the 1.2 update we don't even see a quarter of the amount of players the server used to see and it just isn't viable keeping it running for that reason, if we could.

Thirdly, I didn't realise how much time it would take up. It has taken hours and hours of fixes when things go wrong and hours when Notch updates the server, after having to sit in a Linux Ubuntu shell fixing stuff, the urge to actually play the damn game is out of the window and with Sixth Form I have far too much work to do without having to worry about the Minecraft server going down for some stupid memory leak.

I will put the relevant files up for download (the world, cuboid protection files, warps etc) for anyone who wants to take our server and start it back up.

It didn't last very long but it was fun.

I would like to also say a very special thanks to all those who donated to help the server along the way :)

CPU shouldn't really be an issue on the VPS. The VPS has access to 4 x 2.4GHz Nehalem cores and the dedi has a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 (LOL netburst achitecture) with hyperthreading. Memory could be though. The VPS has 1.5GB.

I have a multiplay minecraft server and it runs pretty damn fine :) Its only 8 player but havent had any problems with it what-so-ever. However, you can only install mods that they have available. But you can ask them to add more if need be :)

I went with a dedi because with multiplay the level of control you get isn't fantastic, which isn't good with a minecraft server. It was originally one of my plans between the VPS and the dedi.

Its pretty simple, just a button press to create a backup. The same with reloading a previous backup.
It takes them a day or two to install uploaded files (i.e. the world file from the dedi)

I hope we can get a new server sorted soon, I only bought minecraft so I could play on this server.

@Tom, if you really think the £55/month UK dedi is the best option, I'd be happy to put in at least £5, but I think multiplay is seriously worth considering.

At the end of the day multiplay works out better, we would be saving around £30 - £40 a month than being on a dedi and that more than makes up for the lack of features. Plus all the features we're missing are barely used, if the server is working fine we don't need any access to it, they have all the mods we use/need already there, and we can map render on our PCs with a copy of the map we can get off the server (if we cant manually we can just request a copy each week.)

It would save you huge amounts of time managing the server, literally all you would have to do is ask for a copy of the map each week. even if we were on a dedi for next month we wouldn't get enough donations for the month afterwards, Multiplay seems the only reasonable way forward.

I think you should have to confirm if someone wants to /tp to you..? So like in the msg box it'd say [Name] would like to teleport to you. y/n? and you'd have to type like /tp y or /tp n. Or you should be able to turn off the teleporting to you fullstop?

What's the deal with mobs? I know they need to be fixed but I can't work out how they've been set up so far... seems you can sometimes hurt them and they can sometimes hurt you but seems somewhat random. Also I wanna be able to hit sheep to get my wool stocks up :(

As far as I can tell, the only way you can hurt mobs is with arrows, and they can only hurt you with arrows (skeleton). You should still be able to get wool from a sheep with a fishing rod or a snowball.

It's gone from a consistent 10 - 15 players online, to 0 - 1! :(

Firstly because Hey0 gave up on minecraft and left all the server owners using it dead in the water. The new system is a little more complex and we still don't have the same functionality we used to with hey0. After the downtime people just became less interested I think.
