I don't make a habit of calling people by their ethnic background, but it's easy if there are a group of people and instead of saying "that person over there" saying "the Asian person".

That is true, but what if the person "over there" was white? Would you say that European person, that North American or that Austrilasian person because you don't know their ethnic background. Following your theory you would have to say "Earthling" or something.

I'm talking about the situation in which I would use a word to describe a person of a different ethnic origin.

If they were white you would go into a more detailed description as there will most probably be more white people than other. So you would describe their appearance more.

But if it was a group of white people and an Asian person, and you were pointing the Asian person out to a friend, my point is i'd say Asian not the word being discussed in this thread.

But wouldn't saying "white people" be classed as racist with all this PC nonesence these days? Also if you knew the person then you would probably know the ethnic background of the person and would not need to say "Asian".

It's easy to say asian rather than say "the one with short dark hair"

I think its silly that we get in so much trouble if we are racist yet if a "P" (:P) says somthing about our skin colour it isn't that bad.

If I knew what their ethnic background was; yes.

My pakistani friends dont mind it, its just like when people try to cus them and say [P][P] etc its just like saying English English, or stuff like that it isnt offensive

yeah ive said it before, and i even call it my pakistani friends who dont mind it at all. its just the same as calling us brits?
