Well the way it is used the majority of the time is pretty offensive no different to the N word for African/Americans.
Quote by Jamie:
Its like I heard someone say this "If a black person is born in britain they call themself british but you dont see a dog born in a stable and consider itself a horse"
Yes it was the comedian Bernard Manning who died yesterday who was a self confessed racist and I find the remark pretty offensive as I am sure the majority of the population do.

I’ll be a story in your head, but that’s okay, because we’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh? Because it was, you know. It was the best. A daft old man who stole a magic box and ran away. Did I ever tell you that I stole it? Well, I borrowed it. I always meant to take it back. Oh, that box, Amy, you’ll dream about that box. It’ll never leave you. Big and little at the same time. Brand-new and ancient and the bluest blue ever. And the times we had, eh? Would had…Never had. In your dreams, they’ll still be there. The Doctor and Amy Pond and the days that never came.
I just call them Asian or Indian.
If they are from Pakistan I will call them a Pakistani.
I utterly despise it when people call a random person a "p" because of the colour of their skin, when they may not even be from pakistan.

Do you refer to Chinese people as Asian? Probably not. So why refer to people from Pakistan as Asian? Do you consider yourself as European if you were talking about your ethnic background? Probably not, you would say either British or English.
People from China are Chinese, people from India are Indian, people from England are English and people from Pakistan are Pakistani.
What can be seen as offensive are the shortened down versions becase they are sometimes used in a racist context. But would you see someone calling you a "Brit" as racist? It's because it is not usually used in a racist context like *REMOVED* can be.
I use the full names like Pakistaini rather than shortened down terms so that they are not percieved as racist, even though they are not really, and saying Asian is not really tangible unless you start refering to Chinese and Japanese people as Asian aswell.

If you don't know a person's ethnic origin you can't call them from the certain country.
Just because they are of a certain skin colour wouldnt make me call them pakistani, i would call them Asian.
And no, believe it or not Nick, I have common sense, and can tell a Chinese person from an Asian person. And I would call them Chinese.
Each person has their own ethnic background, and you can't pinpoint what country everybody is from.
I don't make a habit of calling people by their ethnic background, but it's easy if there are a group of people and instead of saying "that person over there" saying "the Asian person".
