HUGE RAM

I have the choice between 16GB or 32GB of ram, what is ram over 8GB good for..? It's DDR2

What board is it going in?

There's absolutely no point in that much unless it's in a server. Having that much may actually slow it down.

You won't need that much unless you're running a server, you will be wasting your money on more than 4GB really...

Lol if you say so.

Haveing more RAM will make the OS use more RAM, and since the bandwidth of the RAM is nothing special, just the standard DDR2 there will be more data going in and out on the same bandwidth.

I doubt it. Server boards have high quality memory controllers which can handle all of that bandwidth.

Precisely. And a server OS handles RAM differently to a normal OS anyway.

DDR3 is faster but a lot more expensive than DDR2 right now.

Nah there's older ones that are slower. I'm on a PC with SD-RAM right now which is the one before DDR.

4GB RAM then. 8GB if you're buying expensive RAM to go in an expensive motherboard.

Lol ok. Get an x64 version running and i think it'll be a different story. Also, have an integrated graphics card on an x86 and you'll be able to use 4GB. Apparantly there's also a way to make the 32-bit emulate a 36-bit meaning 64GB RAM on a 32-bit.

32GB Will not slow down your server, it will just choke your wallet for about $5000 USD

Go for 16GB and save 3000.

Ummm. No, your wrong. It costs atleast $400 for one 4GB stick.

Unless you think that an 8-core can hold 16 sticks? That would be really embarassing.

Edit: If your multitasking especially rendering videos/graphics, 16GB is baseline for extreme tasks.

DDR-DDR3 makes a big difference; DDR2-3 does not.

I suggest x8 2GB sticks depending on your uses.
