Rep Power

Not exactly a big deal but anyway..

Why have admins got a higher rep now? Seems slightly pointless, why do you increase it every time members start to get more rep than management?

Fair enough if Jin and Sierk want 5 billion rep - they pay for the website after all. Just seems slightly pointless, and takes the entire point out of rep if you just give it to people who could potentially be very unpopular? :P

i agree, like hell oli has 50 rep power pfft

As I said in spam, I don't really have a problem with the 15 being increased but I think 50 is a bit too much! Matt did say that it may not be permanent though.

I have a disliking of this rep level, waaaay over the top.

I personally think administrators should really have their rep set to one.

Setting it to one is stupid and I hope you are joking.

A while back it was changed so administrators could have the rep power they have earned as for most of us this was higher than 15 anyway, I believe Jin changed it to 50 a few days ago to test something so I'm sure he will change it back when he has finished :)

How so? They should have no need to +rep or -rep other people since they should be listening to other peoples opinions fairly and without bias.

rep isnt just for opinions, eg. if they ask where they could buy a laptop and someone shows them

Not all admins -rep users, I don't for one. Regardless of rep count, we should all have access to be able to +rep or -rep users on the forum. Plus, how are we suppose to +rep people that way for us liking their suggestion or anything else that +rep can be used for. (Don't say admincp)

It's for that very reason which calls for general management to have an abundance of reputation in my opinion. They typically use it a lot more sparingly, but when they do it's to encourage and promote those who are making constructive threads, suggestions and to promote discussions.

Well, I will suggest; let them have whatever rep they actually have - and if you want it to look nice, round it up to the nearest 5. (14 will be 15)

We are members of this forum too. I am entitled to +rep posts I find helpful and I am entitled to -rep posts that I find disrespectful/rude.

Any idea what the rep will be at then if it's going to be changed later on from 50?

As it appears to only be a temporary thing, I'm not really that bothered but I'm not a fan of general management (except maybe Jin and Sierk cos its true, they do pay for the site!) having their rep power increased - or decreased by the sounds of it! - as they should earn their rep like everyone else :)

Totally agree.

I hate to say this again, but am I right in saying massive changes were made last year to make new members feel equal - so 50 rep for management is sort of going against the concept :L

But it is temporary so oh well

To me being an admin shouldn't give you more rep power at all. Earn like the rest of us imo.

Jin was testing something, hence the rise. It is only temporarily, not sure how many times that has to be mentioned.

Admin reps have been set to 50 to help bump newer members along. I have been looking at some of our more "prominent" rep holders who have a high rep power and a lot of it seems from pointless repping.

So rather than going through member accounts removing pointless reputation which I don't mind I decided I would increase admin reps to help bump newer members along.

Though you do have your right to feedback we also do have our right to make changes and just because people don't agree with them doesn't mean we will change it. :)

I just love how you and management never say the same thing.

You say it is to bump new members along, but some of us earn our rep - so getting 50 taken off us just because management disagree seems slightly harsh - it would take over 10 people to +rep you to get above that again (using an average).

Are we forgetting, new members should not be given pointless rep :l

Why not just give new members bonus rep if you suddenly care about them having rep?

We'd only lose 25 if they -repped us because of how that's set up (unless that's changed since I last knew) but I agree that countering the "problem" of older users having lots of reputation by giving extra to new members doesn't make any sense

With general management going on about how rep is becoming "worthless" because of too much being given out (although I disagree with that), this looks like a case of do as I say not do as I do :(!

I think Jin would have chose admins for a reason. :P Probably because they can be trusted to use it appropriately and fairly based on rewarding good posts that contribute well to the forum etc. Jin is entitled to do/try out whatever he likes if he thinks it's going to be for a good reason and I'm sure it wasn't just done randomly.

Mmm I agree, I'm not sure which way this was intended to be used but surely it would be hard to single out who admins are giving rep to etc, since the whole purpose of rep is to award it fairly to people who make contributions and not to go round singling people out just because they're new etc. It will mean everyones will be going up by a very large amount at the same time which kinda defeats the object.

Personally I don't think an admin rep is needed at all. Most admins rep power is higher/high enough anyway and members should be trusted to be able to use the rep system appropriately based on what rep power they have worked their way up to.

I think in some cases this whole thing has been taken a bit out of proportion, it's not a permanent thing by the looks of it, and only affects admins. If the Community AGM can get by on 8 rep power and be happy that It's what I've earnt and use it for the benefit of the community for what it's worth, then I'm sure everyone else could too, but it's not an overly important issue and it's not doing much harm at all. Jin is just trying something by the sounds of it. xD

Oh sneaky didn't know it worked differently for admins, and yeah I quite agree with you in that rep was nerfed way back when because there was "too much" of it (which is an odd concept in my view) and whenever a full return to the old system has been suggested we're told that it would alienate new members if some of us had very large rep power, and that this outweighed the idea that with more rep power we could accelerate new member reps, which seems to be the reasoning behind today's change to admin accounts
