You don't need it for Iplayer/skyplayer etc etc only for watching live TV. That's what most people watch. :)
You are meant to pay it. For halls they had a tv licence for the one in the living area but if you wanted one for your room yo uhad to buy your own. lmao Really don't think many people pay them though.
i bought one, £12.50 a month really isn't that much. especially when our whole student village was crawling with the tv licensing vans.
I've got a TV License, no point in getting caught out for such a little amount of money tbh.
£150 which could be spend on more important things, though.
I wasn't sure if you had to pay to watch on iPlayer etc - that is what I was checking. If you did that would be disgusting imo - it isn't like the government haven't already hit students with £27k fees.
How much TV do you watch live then?
I asked this for my sister, and I know she barely watches live tv. Just sky player, iplayer and stuff like that.
Out of interest, if she were to watch Sky Player and watch a live football match (on Sky Sports), would she then require a tv license?
Technically yes but not really. If she is using a laptop and has not plugged it in, then technically she is covered by the parent's/normally resident TV license. It's all very confusing, I decided it would be safest just to get it since I watch quite a bit of TV.
Way i see it you only pay it for bbc channels. GET RID OF BBC!
I'm just taking my iPad and buying Sky player for live football, win/win situation!
I'm quite aware of its investments in freeview and broadcasting as a whole.
May I add that ITV also contributes to freeview, as well as both of the company's work in FreeSat and YouView.
Please don't patronise me.

lol. I understand it all right and I want it privatised. For me it's a welcomed tax cut!
We have to pay technology fees... $350.. it sucks
I take it you also approve of everything Thatcher privatised then.
I would be much more interested in a university fee cut than a privatised BBC. Do you watch any BBC programs, listen to any BBC radio shows at all? Or are you going to pretend you don't have ANYTHING to do with it?
I don't actually, frankly I give the woman credit for making good of a bad situation, but the long-term effects have been these awful council estates and the loss of most industrialisation in Britain. I also disapprove of the fee's rise which you try and make out I love.
And yes, I do watch the BBC nearly 100% of the time when watching television and use the iPlayer loads. Although I still don't see why we should pay for it. It should be able to fund itself with advert revenue like ITV and the various other channels. Especially at a time when families are hard-up and struggling to meet the cost of living in some cases.
That's unfair on all the other TV stations then surely? We don't subsidise them so they can become bigger.
And the BBC would obviously get other means of funding, through program sponsorship, international profits, television adverts, game shows (with those £1 text competitions, etc) and allocating funding on a cost-effective basis rather than wasting huge amounts on BBC proms.
Life is unfair.
However, the fact is all the growth has already happened - once you have that growth and expansion you cannot suddenly stop your source of income - that is common knowledge.
Evidently those £1 text competitions already happen, so clearly they already use those and there are only so many they can use.
The BBC aren't allowed to use them unless they're for charity.
And yes, you're right, the income can't just stop. I'm not saying it should. If it were to be privatised if would need restructuring and shrank.
But clearly it can be done, that is also 'common knowledge'.
I wish you wouldn't try and demote my intelligence in your arguments.
You should... But you don't, cuz you're a student ;) Just enjoy the abusive TV Licensing letters, they're so much fun.
How dare you not buy a television license. Do it for Queen and country.
And to Ajthedragon, stop spurting nonsense. I don't think you quite understand how huge the BBC actually is and what goes on behind the scenes. Television would absolutely suck if it was privatized.
You get enough in your student loan, just pay it. On the other hand, don't - and report back when you get prosecuted so we can all share a laugh at your expense.
You get as much of a student loan as you need if you qualify. I don't qualify for student loans so I don't know how much you get but I know people that do and they have tons of money left over once their expenses are paid. Also, what if you don't qualify for a full student loan or any loan at all you can get a student line of credit, you just pay the interest every month.
Amen to these.
No it didn't; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_of_Discontent
If the BBC is such a great service as you claim it is, then it'll have no problem with competition.Quote:
