I've seen it about twice. I can't stand seeing it more than once every like three years.
Pretty epic film though, just because of the animated scenes. If it didn't have that, the film would of been a flop tbqh.

A flop to you I presume? If you're saying it would have been a flop in success entirely because of the animated series that happened after the films, then that's complete rubbish.

No, I meant without the special effects, not the animation series, wrong words.

If it didn't have them or they weren't as good, the plot alone couldn't of sustained its success.

Wouldn't most films fail without any special effect scenes?

Hmm in one way yes, but in most the plot is enough to sustain them. But I don't feel this was the case for the matrix.

The Matrix has one of the best science fiction plots ever in my opinion. The whole idea of a fake reality controlled by machines is genius. The backstory explained in The Animatrix is also superb, even though the whole man vs machine plot is pretty cliche these days. The special effects were indeed amazing and still are, but eventually they will be outdone while the plot is something that can never be replaced. I have to say, this is the first time I've ever seen anyone criticize the story in The Matrix. Ever.

Mmm, in that way, I agree. But had you never thought as a kid or something that maybe you were in a different world or something like that? Which is probably where the original idea came from, the producers and directors were just some of the first to use it. Then there's the "it's too confusing" thing. Which yes it can be until you manage to get you head round it, this is why I say, without the effects, it would of just been a confusing plot, surely?

The effects are part of the story. The Matrix itself within the film is everything seen on screen with the bullet time, etc. So yes, without the effects, there would be no story, but that's because the effects are a key element of the story rather than just there to be snazzy.

Regardless, the SFX style is highly influenced by John Woo's Hard Boiled.
