Nope, I never thought anything like that when I was a kid. Who seriously would? I watched The Matrix when I was a kid and didn't have the slightest idea what was going on.

The Wachowski brothers pulled ideas from everywhere to create The Matrix, but a lot of inspiration for the story especially was from an anime movie called Ghost in the Shell. There is so many similarities its actually quite surprising. In Ghost in the Shell people with cyberbrains and able to connect to the internet by plugging a wire into a socket at the back of their neck, just like how they connect to the matrix in The Matrix. Theres actually a pretty good comparison of similar scenes on YouTube (here) and the two films make great companion pieces.
