A rep counter for both +rep and -rep, OR none at all.
Just keep the counter for +rep, but don't add a counter for -rep.
Fair enough. We'll see what everyone else thinks about it too.idk if it's been problem but i know i don't feel very good if even one person is repping someone who has made a negative post towards me :p now imagine that for ppl where others are getting 10+ reps... i get repped more for mean comments i make than helpful tbh so rep isn't always use positively really

I've left, but I still visit sometimes!
I feel that polls like this do very little to actually help, being so closed in terms of option and also because I don't believe that a majority vote necessarily shows informed intent - yes, even on polls where my own opinions have had the majority count before anyone steps in with that. Discussion and educated action is far superior to base democracy in these things.
My own opinion is that it makes sense for negatives to be just as visible as positives (be that ON/ON or OFF/OFF) but if we want to steer away from negativity it would be best to just have negative reps remove 1 from the total score shown. Currently if a person makes a strikingly witty post about bees they may deservedly get lots of +rep and the counter will show that figure, but if some bunch of evil bee haters -rep them their views (no matter how dastardly and misled) have no visible effect, which then casts a false display on the popular opinion of the post in question. It could surely be made that anything less than +1 displays nothing at all while not making it appear that unpopular opinions are popular as can/does happen at the moment
what's the point in -rep if people mainly use it purely because they don't like that person or they disagree with the persons opinion?
the majority of people that care about their rep (which seems like a surprisingly sad amount of people) will get it removed anyway.
just get rid of it
I forgot about that! You make a great point.+rep can cause just as much arguments and negativity. you've seen how someone attacks another then they get 10 or so repping them for it, just makes the person who was being attacked feel like **** knowing everyone's repping them for it lol it would be fairer to have a -rep symbol too to show that just coz someone got ten rep for being a ****, there are other people who have minus repped it, either tht or not show any at all
I guess it wouldn't affect everyone and so just hasn't been brought up before - or if it has, may it was within another thread.
Yeah if a post received both positive and negative rep it should just basically add on to each other, so 3 +reps and 4 -reps would display a -1. I guess this is how the coding would then become more complicated than a simple edit which I didn't think about before hand.I feel that polls like this do very little to actually help, being so closed in terms of option and also because I don't believe that a majority vote necessarily shows informed intent - yes, even on polls where my own opinions have had the majority count before anyone steps in with that. Yeah that's why I can't see why it is even still here, seeing as the reason for no -rep counter is the whole negative atmosphere argumentwhat's the point in -rep if people mainly use it purely because they don't like that person or they disagree with the persons opinion?

If people only want +reps displayed and not -reps... Why do some people argue for a like and dislike systemUnless of course they only want a like system, which is then just going backwards from the current +rep/-rep situation
I'm not fussed if we don't get a -rep counter, even though I'd like one. I mean, at least have the current +rep counter be deducted, but never show below 0.
A bit like voting on reddit.
I just see it as a pointless add on and can only see it bringing drama. With -rep it's really more of a private thing, in both scenarios (the -repper, the -repped) I wouldn't want others seeing the post even if it's anonymous.
I've voted for both. Would be nice imo!
whilst a portion of current highly repped posts are because someone made a funny at the expense of someone else, that doesnt mean all posts displaying multiple reps are of that nature... yes the +rep display currently has the potential to perpetuate negativity and victimise certain users but displaying -reps would do it so much worse and more frequently. the aim of +rep display is to convey a positive atmosphere and encourage people to share the love and to a good enough extent it does just that.
I've only ever -repped posts if I was a few days/weeks late reading them. if I had qualms with the post reading it te day it was posted then I would much rather add to the discussion than give the poster a private dig about it and would encourage everyone to do the same. creates more fruitful and less one-sided discussions.
either dont change anything or remove -rep lol
happy diwali
Well there's nothing anyone can do about that. Even if -rep was completely taken out of the picture, arguments would still occur and negative atmospheres would still be created. All we can do is try to minimise it by keeping -rep private and moderating all arguments revolving around -rep.
"Tonight we have changed part of rule A5 which stopped users from posting reputation comments. "
If you don't mind me asking, what made you come to the decision to now allow people to post and share their reputation comments? Surely this means -rep is no longer private and therefore it can now create a negative atmosphere. I can't see any benefits to people sharing their -rep comments but I can see the negatives already :S.
-rep is no longer all private, so what would you do now?
