We had the opportunity to play the first section of John Cena’s Road to Wrestlemania storyline. Here is what we saw. The first thing we saw was John Cena opening up Raw with an in-ring promo. Basically he dedicated this week’s match against Mr Kennedy to his friends serving in the armed forces. He mentions that he is particularly interested in catching up with a armed service member named “Tony.” Next up you go to the locker room which with each of the different characters that are available in the Road to Wrestlemania mode will have a unique locker room specific to his character.

In the locker room you can check out the schedule, see what different challenges are for this particular week and check your voicemail. The challenges are your way to unlock the several unlockables in the game. Specific examples, are Superstars, arenas, and a new previously unseen match type.

So you have your match against Kennedy and it’s a regular exhibition one on one bout and you take the loud mouth to school. After the match, commentators Jim Ross and the King Jerry Lawler mention that this match was dedicated to the troops and that the tribute to the troops event is next week.

From there you take on MVP and in the locker room you find out that you have to make the highest paid WWE Superstar on Smackdown to beat the challenge. The Tribute to the troops arena is very nicely done. Its a outdoor arena with all of the fans around ringside and in the “arena” wearing army uniforms. Off in the distance you can see tanks, and humvees.

After beating MVP by submission, you will unlock the Tribute to Troops arena to be used in all of the other modes. Next week, at Raw MVP is in the ring talking about how he was cheated and that John Cena isn’t a hero like MVP is. MVP claims that he is leaving the USA and that any of the other WWE superstars are welcome to join him. MVP claims that he is no longer a US citizen. That concluded our hands on time with the Road to Wrestlemania mode but we were told that MVP forms his own country called IAMBETTERTHANYOUTOPIA and that his country is in the squared circle.

Other random notes from the event, we will have a video interview with Bryan Williams where a lot of good information is revealed. You wont want to miss that. And we did manage to pick up a updated build of the 360 version so expect even more coverage from GR in the very near future.

I did have a chance to play the WII version and the interactive cut scenes was done really well.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will feature 66 playable superstars.

The DS version will feature over 20 superstars and it looks like it is nicely coming along. I played 1 match between Santino and Big Daddy V. You tap the screen to strike and you draw a circle and use the dpad to perform a grapple.

The Create a belt mode is absent this year. The reason that they gave was that it was a feature that was not used very much by the fans. They felt that with the addition of the Highlight reel, and create a finisher will soften the blow of the loss.

It looks like THQ is looking at allowing gamers to have the ability to make their own titantrons in future editions.

I couldn’t get a reason why the Wrestlemania 24 level has a room and is not outdoors. Perhaps it is a licensing issue?

Trophy support does not look likely this year for the PS3.

Yeah. I'm glad how detailed the tribute to the troops arena is. Also, John Cena's story sounds quite good.

I don't think there are any pics or videos of it. The only new match type I know of this year is falls count anywhere. I doubt it's the one that is being explained above though, since falls count anywhere pics have already been released.

Well Falls Count Anywhere is just the Hardcore match renamed since WWE never uses that term anymore. There is Inferno, but that's already been announced. I wonder what it could be.

This new match type will most likely be a totally customisable match... I remember reading that in RTW mode some matches have twists, like a 5 pin count. So this could be a match where you make the rules. I want to make a 6 man title scramble.

It was confirmed in an interview with a french mag that Bra and Panties is returning next game.

Im pretty sure its been done, and in the story its made as a special rule in a match. It would be funny, would make matches last a bit longer and whatnot.

Wayne, why would you change the WWE Tag Team Champions to London and Kendrick? The default champions will most likely be Hawkins and Ryder.

Unfortunatley, 20-man Battle Royals would simply not fit in the ring. The ring is apparently going to be smaller than SD vs. RAW in Legends of WrestleMania, so I'd definitely rule that out on the game too.

Yeah, I'll probably change World Tag champs to DX. I liked Kendrick & London as a team Misawa. It's a shame the ring will be smaller in LOW. I also read that the wrestlers in LOW will look bulkier than in real life, so it's going to look rather childish and like the other Legends of Wrestling titles. :@

I kind of like the way that the wrestlers will be bigger, it recreates their larger than life perception back in the '80s and '90s.

Yeah, I get what you're saying Misawa. From the images so far, all the crowd holds up are foam fingers, which is quite realistic. I think there will be loads of signs though since the roster must cover over 15 Wrestlemanias. I'm not sure whether the creators of LOW realise how much the fans want in the game. We want all superstars who have appeared in Wrestlemania since Wrestlemania I to about Wrestlemania 16, all arenas from 16 Wrestlemanias, maybe outdoor arenas, the different title belts used in all Wrestlemanias, signs for every superstar, commentators from back in the day upto Wrestlemania 16 and all taunts.

Chris Masters had his first WWE Championship match on the November 28 edition of Raw. It was a Triple Threat Submission Match with Kurt Angle and John Cena. Masters was struck with a chair shot from Cena, who ultimately retained the title, forcing Masters to tap out to Cena's newly-debuted STF-U.


Masters entered the hunt for the WWE Intercontinental Championship but would soon be suspended by WWE.


On the May 7 edition of Raw, Masters challenged for Santino Marella's newly-won WWE Intercontinental Championship. Masters was unable to defeat the newcomer, losing via a roll-up.

You control who wins and how they win. You can't control the actual wrestling because, well, that's just too hard to make, especially for one man.

Yeah Felony, Extreme Warfare Revenge is the game prior to Total Extreme Wrestling, which has the images. Wayne, the pictures are 3D models and there are no real wrestlers in the game because he sells it, and he can't put any actual wresters in the game for legal issues. I really don't like TEW for that fact, and prefer a 2008-updated EWR.

Tonight's confirmed superstar is one of my fave mid carders of all time. Liked him since Attitude era: Hardcore Bob Holly. :P Great to see him back on a SVR game.

A spear off the cell would mean Edge would go flying off the cell as well. Also, I just watched a SVR09 Hell In A Cell match. You can smack your opponents head and graze their head against the cell on the outside now. Also, the animation for climbing up the cell has changed. Finally, when you slam your opponent through the top of the cell, the wrestler you are falls onto the ground as well and holds his back for a bit then gets up.

I have not watched as much of the IGN coverage this year as im far too busy. I will also not be downloading the demo (if I can resist), so the game has more of a suprise factor.


I had that problem last year, played the demo for ages and was bored of 08 after a few weeks.

Yeah, but 85 for London & Kendrick? That's way too over the top. CM Punk has 87 and he's way better than London & Kendrick. Rey Mysterio also has 1 point higher than London & Kendrick and Mysterio has won the World Heavyweight title before. I know I'm going on a bit, but Great Khali has an overall of 82, which is reasonably low. Finally, Mark Henry's overall is 86, 1 point higher than London & Kendrick and Mark Henry has been ECW champ.

Yeah you can change stats in RTW, but you can only change the stats of wrestlers that are playable in RTW mode such as Batista, HHH, Mysterio, Jericho etc.

Atm though edge is my champion 'cos him and chris jericho beat john cena in a handicapt match for the title and then chris and edge were both the champ but after 2 months of them seriously injuring every aponent they were faced with general manager shelton benjamin was left with no choice but to pit off jericho and edge in a no holds barred match for the undisputed world heavy weight title.
It looked like jericho was going to prevail but after a quick reversal from edge jericho ended up trapped in the ropes with a chair wrapped around his kneck.
Not letting friendship get in the way edge held no punches when he crashed the steel steps into jericho; crushing his throat and putting him on the shelf until forther notice.

WG: None. But you can set their TT Finisher when you create a stable of those 2. Bros. of Destruction have a double Chokeslam!

C: Weapons in HIAC?

WG: No weapons, but a new climb up animation and throw down animation. Also you don't land on the announce table when your opponent is lying in front of it. The new throwing Animations look really nice.

C: Tag team entrances?

WG: Nearly all Teams come out together. Even Teams which team up rarely come out together like Undertaker + Kane.

C: DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEAM-MANAGEMENT AND CAS?

WG: Most is the same as 08. The differences are more Options like TT Finisher.

C: Tournament still in?

WG: Same as in 08.

C: Does the COM do Tags at the right time?

WG: The Tag Team KI is very good like it says in the hands on. If the COM is damaged, he tries to tag. We even were victim of lots of Hot Tags.

C: Can Rey Mysterio lift the great Khali or Big Show again?

WG: Rey Mysterio could lift Festus perfectly! Burt that does not mean that there's no weight limits. You have to wait until the full version is out.

C: Are there still Ultimate Control grapples.

WG: You still got to move the RS left/right. But the selection is bigger.

Community: What is the difference between the "old" 6-man match-TT and the new?

WG:There is no 2 against 2 against 2 matches that probably some wanted. There is a 3 against 3, in which both teams but only one bar have momentum. The changed tag team game play has also found here withdrawal.

C: Kick in the back and then Grapple glitch in?

Wg: It seems that it's possible. If this works online, we can't say.

C: GM mode?

WG: No GM Mode like announced by Thq/Yuke's.

C: New Ladder match victory scene?

WG: Looks same as 08. But the Ladder Match is better because it takes longer to remove the belt.

C: Can they possibly say what Superstars have alt. Attires?
WG: When you play the Road to Wrestlemania, we have a bonus target of the second outfit Rey released. This is in a blue hold. Otherwise, few superstars have a second outfit. This is definitely not just about the professional wrestler from the RtWM.

C: What arenas are in and how does Tribute to the troops look?
WG: All known PPV arenas of the current year are included. There are still some arenas to unlock. This will probably also be where Tribute to the Troops belong, because we could not choose.

C: Unlockables?

WG: Yes! We saw in the selection that there are unlockable Superstars.

C: Are there normal and strong back grapples?

WG: Should be like in 2008!

Lol, yeah that would be great. I like it this year how in tag matches, the referee counts to 5 for the illegal man in the ring to get out, instead of trying to push him out/block him like in previous games.

Lmao, yeah that was stupid. It's hard to imagine wrestling in a game without a referee though. For example, back in SD2 there was no referee in the ring. :P

Yeah lol. I read earlier that you can have the 1 2 3 popups for when you're pinning your opponent. Personally, I'll keep the 1 2 3 popups off since without them your match looks more realistic and TV programming like.

I probably won't end up getting svr 2009 til ages after it's release date unless somewhere does a dead good offer like woolworths usually sell the new smackdown games for like 20 quid.
But i dunno cos i rly want tna impact even though smackdown is obv gonna be better lol

SVR09 is definately better this year. TNA has such a lack of superstars, although the graphics on the TNA game look great. I've seen SVR09 for cheap on shopto.net
