The other thing about this mute, is that it is encouraging users to ask others to come off Habbo/open a new window with a link to another site where they can chat UNMODERATED. This in itself is dangerous for the safety of young people.

Cheers for the vid matt.

Paul just tweeted:

Habbos, a video summarizing #TheGreatUnmute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvWLIjWdQO0 enjoy!

The video is quite lame. Seems like they're trying to use older users' experiences to show the public (who won't even look at this) what sort of community Habbo is now.

^ LOL I thought it sounded like a eurovision song, too.

I haven't been on Habbo in a good while (joined in 2005/6), and I only found out this morning that I still had an account on this forum, lol. But still, I really hope Sulake and Habbo get back on its feet, when I heard all the news and gossip surrounding the 'sex scandal' investigation I was really concerned, seeming as I played it almost everyday when I was 12-14 (now 18). Despite the fact I don't think - from what i've seen - the investigation was carried out incredibly well (was she going purposely into 'TEEN PARTY LOLOL HAVE BOBBA HERE HURR' rooms or just chatting around like normal?), I've got to be honest, I really wasn't surprised. I mean come on, allowing these rooms like 'T33N PARTY ;)) BEDS <3 LOVE <3' and the suggestive ads which have been placed everywhere, they were probably going to get into some sort of trouble or bump in the road somewhere. It's been really interesting seeing a whole community pulled together over something like this, and I really hope they improve the moderating system as well. I'm all for more moderators and volunteer MODs (anyone remember hobbas?) who have had training to deal with situations involving this.

I know my input is probably worthless and churning up facts already discussed here, but hnnnggh I really hope it recovers from this. It's been brilliant seeing all the feedback coming from users, let's just hope Sulake takes them into consideration. :c

So ignore everything they say, and only pick out the select few who may be brown nosing or paying a compliment? The parents are going to think they're talking to a child, with the intelligence to match :/

I seriously don't understand this man, and his ideas. How do they know there's going to be a presence of 'alert' helpers, when he removed our ability to communicate with other Habbos through the Helper, followed by removing the tool completely?

I haven't been banned for like 4 or 5 years now. i just have 1000 and one warnings LOL (mostly unfair cos mods can't read english) So with anyluck they will take it in to an account such as "Yes this user has been banned and warned, user has learnt from mistakes... But when you submit a help request they always ask for other accounts, and I'm going to assume they'll be even stricter when it comes to applying for a powerful postition like guardian. I'd put my 5-year-old account on cos it's clean but if someone was perm banned then made a new one, they wouldn't HAVE to declare it, as they wouldn't be able to prove it.

Hmm, given his posts to ENGLISH speaking users on his Twitter last week saying we would be unmuted today I got my hopes up. Then he said all hotels would receive communication this week. He's now backtracked on that and said some this week. He's answered questions regarding dates for all hotels apart from .com. Now he's told us via Twitter that .com will only be unmuted when the Guardian system is ready. He then told someone the Guardian system doesn't actually have a date, but they hope to have it ready within a few weeks. I'm sorry, Paul, but if you keep .com closed for another two weeks it will die. User numbers have already sunk to a complete low, even I'm beginning to get annoyed with this mute now. It's all the more frustrating when we can see other hotels receive their chat back. Why can't they just give us the limited chat now? They've had several days to test it on the Finnish hotel, they've unlocked it for two more, yet we have no end in sight. It's ridiculous. Even a filter preventing most words would be better than this silence. I can't see many people sticking with them much longer, I know I'm losing the will. And Paul's constant hints on his Twitter that .com will be unmuted, then backtracking is just ridiculous. Just be honest Paul, if you don't want to unmute us then tell us now and we'll stop wasting time holding torches and filling up rooms.

Not really true. I love playing on Habbo but I'm getting frustrated now and I can see why so many others already have. That said, I'm still logging in everyday and I'll definitely be on again full time (by that I mean as much as I was before the mute) once the mute is lifted, it's just annoying having this mute and I'm getting angry and upset that I can't play at the moment, as I'm sure many others are, and already have, too. It's made worse by the fact that other hotels have been unmuted and we haven't. There's no reason they couldn't unmute .com right now with the limited chat. It's not gonna open them up to paedophiles considering there's a list of ALLOWED words. They wouldn't even really need to moderate with the whitelist on to be honest as so many words can't be used. It would just be nice if they gave us the limited chat (even if it is awfully limited) whilst they sort out the things to follow. At least then we could communicate in some way.

Habbo.com will be last to be unmuted because we're the hotel Channel 4 and the British media will report on once new features are implemented. I'm guessing they want to do test runs on the Hotels where sexual behaviour wasn't as big an issue, so that things will run smoothly when the spotlight is back on.

Oh yes, I guessed at this myself as soon as we found out the unmutes would happen one hotel at a time. As you say, the media aren't interested in the other hotels; just .com. What's frustrating though is that there's no reason they couldn't unmute .com right now with the limited chat. Afterall, it's a list of words we're allowed to say, blocking anything not included on the list. I don't see why they can't give that to all the hotels now that they've had time to test it on Finland; provided there's no bugs in the system it's a filter which will obviously work. There's no reason they couldn't unmute us now with the strict filter (giving us at least some way to communicate, however limited/restricted then continue to test the other features on the other hotels. The fact we won't be unmuted with even the filter until the Guardian system is ready, and Paul has said that could take a few weeks, is just ridiculous. His reason for doing every other hotel first is based on the fact most of the staff don't have very good English. Then, when he is tweeted saying that they should have more English native language speakers for the .com hotel, he says they have plenty. He seems to be contradicting himself there. Infact, he seems to contradict himself a lot.

We already know it won't be .com; we're last and won't be unmuted until the Guardian system is ready, which he already said yesterday will be a few weeks. He hinted heavily on Monday that France would reopen soon, I think they will be one of the hotels named tomorrow.

I don't think that's fair and I find it insulting that you refer to players who have spent good many on a game as freaks, just because they care about the investment (not just money, time aswell ) that they have made. For most of us Habbo is simply a place to relax after a busy day, playing games and chatting to friends. Yes, in a way it is good that the mute has given people time to reflect on how much time they spend on the site, but it's also not unreasonable to expect that most players will return to the site, whether it be because of furni or friends or just because they enjoy playing the game.

But I would imagine within the next ten years I will have left the game anyway. And I don't think the current issues will cause the site to close, not considering the turnover Sulake made last year from Habbo. I'm just going to leave it at that because in all honestly I find the way you compose your posts to be quite insulting; it's not funny that people have spent good money on a game only for it to close (which as I said I don't think will happen for some time yet anyway, if at all).

I'm glad the mute has made you realise you need to step away from the game, but at the same time, it's finding a balance between real life and the net which is most important, a balance which I learnt long ago. For me, playing on Habbo for too long isn't an issue; I'm not logged on everyday and I don't spend too much time on the hotel anyway. it's just something that's there which I can choose to play if I'm bored and I think that's probably how most people look at it. It's no different to a console game such as COD or Pokemon; the key is finding a balance between playing the game and living a life.

The accusations against Sulake/Habbo were very strong. As a result, a lot of mistakes were uncovered and the entire Habbo population took part in contributing ideas that they wanted to see implemented into Habbo through TheGreatUnmute.com. Sulake may oversee Habbo which is a large game, but their staff are only human and they are taking into consideration that they are still under the spotlight of the media and parents. I understand your frustration but in my experience; development of games cannot be rushed. I have worked for two separate games that are similar to Habbo (not retros) and when rushed, things come out very sloppy.

They're not delaying it, they're making sure all of their I's are dotted and T's are crossed -- they cannot afford another slip up.

Don't take this post as an attack, just attempt to understand that they're working as best as they can and they're not holding off to be mean to you or other users. They want their entire Habbo population back just like before and as bad as you do. Patience is key.

I was thinking filtered chat referred to any form of chat system though I can see how it could mean a blacklist as opposed to whitelist. The thing making me think he's referring to any form of chat is another Tweet he made, in which he said no date had been set for .com yet. As far as I'm aware, the hotels which have already been muted haven't even gotten a chat without the whitelist yet, so I'm certain what Paul means is that .com will only be unmuted in any form until the Guardian system is ready. Still a bit confused though, because as you say, it could be taken another way.

The safety quiz is ridiculous, is it supposed to filter out pedophiles? Is he aware that this safety quiz is not a real test and people can lie to get in? If this is his way of reinstating the rules it is taking too much time and it really shouldn't be that difficult.

It also seems like Paul encourages Habbo users protesting against Channel 4 and the mute - such pretentiously hypocritical behavior; Channel 4 isn't responsible for their terrible solution, and he is enforcing the unnecessary mute.

The idea behind the safety quiz is to educate new users and for Sulake to have something, for when someone does inevitably break the rules, to say 'well, you knew what you were doing because you answered the quiz correctly, we did everything we could to ensure you knew the rules.' It's in no way an attempt at removing paedophiles from the site; the moderators and guardians are there for that.

And the mute is completely necessary; one to put an immediate end to the type of behaviour that landed them in this situation, and secondly so they can work on fixes to the problem. Sulake couldn't sit back and do nothing, to be honest the mute is the best reaction they could have given to the situation; it shows they are actively trying to prevent this behaviour from continuing and also working on a fix.

Guys n gals - here's a couple of thoughts:

- He's the CEO: although he'll have been in contact with everybody over the last couple of weeks, there will be plenty of testing going on. Hey, they might find a serious flaw in the coding so they might require additional test. A CEO's role is basically a frontman of the company, so although the communication by Paul L. is a bit poor, he'll at some level be receiving the same amount of news as us sometimes - he isn't an expert on coding/flash/shockwave/whatever runs Habbo nowadays.

- .com isn't as significant: when there are sites like .es/.com.br with 000's more of regular users than .com, those sites are bigger cash cows for Sulake - they'll prioritise them a lot more (hell.. lose 2,000 users on .com or maybe 5/6,000 on .com.br? A lot more opportunity bringing income in from the latter). .com also happens to be at the front of the allegations, so any reintroduction of chat will be scrutinised heavily by the British press - looking at how its improved, whether there is a danger of letting young users on the site etc. This press will be passed on worldwide, so making sure its flawless would be a priority for Sulake.

I haven't played habbo or posted on here in a while but tbh i'm kinda glad this happened. The main reason being to get back at sulake for destroying the game that i once loved. On a side note, the channel four report is laughable. 10/11 year olds are not even supposed to be signing up to habbo not to mention that this reporter was obviously looking for trouble in the hotel. Next thing they attack will be club penguin.

That's why the report was amazing, because 10 and 11 year olds do use Habbo. Heck, the lowest reported age was 8 and Habbo knew nothing about it. Whether they purposely looked for the rooms or not is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is that these rooms should never of existed yet apparently they're suitable for 13 year olds. Like you said, Sulake deserve all this for completely destroying the game and having it hit rock bottom. This will either make them or kill them, and if these useless attempts to fix the system are anything to go by, it will probably kill it.

Tweet by Paul: No player mod scheme. The community is being mobilized to chase inappropriate behavior from the site. Mods remain professional.

HOW CAN HE RELY ON THE COMMUNITY TO SORT OUT THE PROBLEMS RAISED IN THAT REPORT? Once all this has died down, people won't report and people won't do anything and it will go back to how it was before. Why are they so out-of-touch with this kind of thing? Some kind of scheme having people "earn" their freedom is daft because anyone can do it anyway... ugh... forget it, reading his tweets just make me question a few things.

Haha, I saw that last night and was like ":l" irl. Are guardians or whatever it's bloody called, going to end up with ban powers lol? Idek what they're supposed to be getting - only bans and extreme moderation would reduce the kind of paedophilia in the hotel but guardian Hobbas really aren't the solution to that.

Update, and about Fansite Adverting.

Update: Paul posted this on Twitter. ".no, .se, and .dk are next, .com right after that. Final checks on current systems in process. Steadily we return to normal."

I asked him about Fansite Advertising he had this to say: "What do you mean?" then "Not my top priority right now. Getting friends reconnected is top priority. thanks"

So, he is just saying that he doesn't know about fansites atm. I know this will be moved, just thought I would post in incase it's not. Enjoy! :)

Biggest hotel & the media spotlight was pinned predominately on the .COM hotel, so they want to show that they are taking all the required action and implementing it properly on the 'lesser' hotels

Reason is people wanna talk. .com will become more popular when Paul unmutes us. If you go to the spain hotel, you can translate the questions with ease and get the answers right, or guess. I got 5/5 and can talk. It's really hard to say American words tho. So, most likely we are not gonna have foreigners on our hotel.

We are not the biggest community. .com.br/.pt is. Followed by .es and then .com.

As people have said, all the focus was on .com hence us being unmuted last. I feel sorry for the really small hotels though - .fi, .se and .no get very little users online so a 2 week mute wasn't really necessary for them. Hence .fi being unmuted first.

This is something that worries me a lot. Our .com hotel has a lot of foreigners who have no hotel for their own language, especially people from Malaysia/SG and the Philippines. Perhaps they will add words from those languages to the whitelist, but I bet not, resulting in even fewer users on our site. I have a lot of friends from those countries on habbo so it will really be a pity if they can't use the site with their home-country friends.

New blog post:

Habbos,

In the next 24 hours, we are opening limited communication in the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish language sites. We are doing final reviews for the restoration of the English speaking site and will have news on that later this week. We are working full time to restore the connections in our Community.

Over the last six months, we have tried several new communication methods to discuss the needs of the Communities with you. Some you have embraced, some you have not. Your feedback, which culminated in The Great Unmute, told us several important things. Friendships are all important. Campaigns must return. Clearly written articles describing latest news on the workings of the site must return. More contests. Revive Hobbas.

We’ve heard you and we are going to bring back a lot of these things as quickly as we can. Hobbas will come back in an updated form known as Guardians almost immediately. We will have campaigns in July and August that will have a greater focus on contests. We are going to make news more available and easier to find. We are going to gather feedback and encourage discussion about Habbo on our site. When we launch that, I will spend less time on external social media and more time in our site discussing Habbo with you.

To ensure we have a community that is as safe as possible, all Habbos have to earn the right to free expression. To do that you will have passed the security quiz and have spent enough time in the limited chat portion of the service to learn the Habbo Way. Once you have earned the Community’s trust, it is your responsibility to keep it. That means you do not engage in inappropriate behavior nor tolerate those who do. Engage or tolerate? Depending on severity, you will be asked to leave to start over from the beginning.

To earn your trust we will always protect your privacy and anonymity. We are deploying monitoring software that detects patterns of inappropriate behavior and we will continue to devote a majority of our resources to keeping the site a place that does not tolerate inappropriate behavior. And as Staff who supports your Community, we always engage in a discussion about what you need, and how we can do better.

All of this together means more to do, more friends to have and an environment of trust where safety is a shared responsibility and we all know it works.

Thanks,
Paul

Exactly! Why is he still the CEO of Sulake when he is clearly a bumbling buffoon? It makes no sense, he clearly doesn't know how serious running a business is and just won't accept he is wrong and make obvious changes. He's a completely narcisstic, arrogant and idiotic man! Any one of us on here can do a better job.

It's shocking that people try to support him by saying "He's only been CEO since September!" So? He should of been aware of the problems on day one, not sitting behind a computer on Twitter giving himself some self-love. A ships captain wouldn't take over from the previous one on a sinking ship going "Well this is all fine, time to sit back and relax." Urgh.

Yeah I don't think they consider that September is 10 months ago, that's more than enough time and him saying over the past 6 months he's been doing something about it when really he should have done something about it for 10 months.

Earn their way into English... wow ok. Completely forgot languages can be learnt in a few months, oh wait lol. English is taught in a lot of countries, but trying to force them into learning it is rather unfair :/ Just because the guy himself knows about 4 languages it doesn't mean everyone else has the knowledge to do that.

I know right, I don't want to say Yogurt, it's annoying the american versions of some words. really is

and "re" become "er"

Not to mention how they want to replace every bloody s with a z:

Organize
Realize
Apologize

THERE IS NO NEED TO DO THAT. If you say "Sorry" and then say "Realise", there is little to no difference between the S in each word, it doesn't need to be replaced by a z.

Don't even get me started on why they haven't dropped the k from "knife" if they want to drop letters.

I wish he was joking, but knowing him he's serious. Paul's stupid so it's best not to pay any attention to him. Unfortunately, Habbos around the globe are stuck with him.

Can't they just have a huge, global filter which all hotels work off of (to allow all languages), and then allow each individual hotel to block harmful foreign words which in one hotel are considered harmless while in another offensive? Is that too simple or are they showing their weaknesses in the head department again?

Can't they just have a huge, global filter which all hotels work off of (to allow all languages), and then allow each individual hotel to block harmful foreign words which in one hotel are considered harmless while in another offensive? Is that too simple or are they showing their weaknesses in the head department again?

It shouldn't be that hard at all :/ It was how it worked previously yet it wasn't updated enough on .com (C@m se% wasn't filtered lol). If they maybe dedicated time to getting rid of the large majority of ways to bypass the filter - especially sex-wise - then we wouldn't have a bloody whitelist which restricts multi-lingual users and basic chat in general. Sure, we can get out the basic chat (by earning our way out somehow) but the multi-lingual users is still an issue ;/ + American vs British English.

Seriously, if they had just made the old filter stricter by catching out alternatives - e.g. Se% - then we wouldn't be in this massive drama atm. And certain words were blocked on other hotels, you couldn't say SS (for SnowStorm) on .de for obvious reasons :P

Runescape is a good model for Habbo. Their filter picked up irregularities in conversation. I think moderators used to pick up on people talking in symbols - because why else would you need to? So when someone starts chucking symbols into conversations, they must be watched because they could be up to no good. It makes no sense why Sulake or so disorganised. If anything, they're a prime example of an organised chaos - they try to be professional but muck up in the details and execution.

Runescape even had a global filter. If Habbo can convert it into a whitelist filter, so all languages are involved, then all hotels can be multi-lingual without discriminating against 'foreign' users. Either that, or not have a whitelist filter and stop being so damn lazy and have moderators and a system in place to pick up on irregular and dodgy conversations, like they should be doing on a sensitive site like Habbo :/

Or we could have MODs who react to calls for help if a user is being asked for sex instead of just saying "mute them". Obviously we'd still need a blacklist, but they can't block every single word, especially if it's being spelt $3X or something. Then we could get rid of the whitelist. Yeah ok, that's a lot for MODs to go through every call for help, but isn't that what MODs are for :S

How does the filter even work on Habbo? What words does it even pick up - only remotely sexual ones? I wouldn't put it past them to not have a filter because the amount of sexual talk going on was disgraceful, a filter would have picked up more than enough of those conversations if it was half-decent (like Runescape's as you said... that's probably the only thing I've ever liked about Runescape now :P).

It's a wonder they didn't pick up on the "@" symbol out of everything tbh? I used it so much for giving out MSN to people and you know how the MODs are over personal info :P. But yeah, I understand what you mean by not needing to use symbols... very little point in it on Habbo.

I don't think they can adapt to a whitelist which allows all languages due to them adding the words manually. If they wish to spend 100s of hours going through the 1000s of languages on this planet and adding them to the white list, it's just unnecessary and time-wasting > A strict "black list" is a much easier option.

Picking up on symbols is a very good idea though aha. I would go tell Paul but 1 - He doesn't care. 2 - I don't like Twitter ;l. 3 - They're never going to improve moderation unless it involves Guardian Hobbas

BamitsElfie!; Of course they can't block EVERY word. But as they have done with the poll in the Picnic on foreign hotels, create a poll-like thing and ask users to submit words that they know can be used to ask for sex or whatever. Not sure how many would be willing to do that, but I certainly would aha.

Their only downfall would be apostrophes though. I believe I could type C''''A''''M without it being filtered, apostrophes seem to allow a lot to bypass the filter (especially the number filter on forums).

I was just going to mention Runescape and Habbo can really learn from it. Playing both games for many years I really get the feeling that the staff at Jagex really do care and listen to the communities opinions.. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it being an English company or simply possessing better, more capable staff..

Sulake doesn't seem bothered about anything other than profit, as long as they're selling furniture they don't care. I know this is the main focus of every business but they need to keep their fan base happy to maintain/increase on their current profit.. The community usually know a lot more about the game than the staff, as their experience of being on the game will far surpass many staff working for the company.. so they should really pay a lot more attention to what we want and not just what they want to hear

Jagex used to care about their community, however they do not give a monkeys any longer about community, so much so that the High level forums on runescape is just full of maxed players slating the Jagex team, and rightly so.

The filter however works to an extent of filtering words, but it doesnt stop autotypers or gold farming sites, so it's still a pile of ****.

In summary, not much to learn from Jagex.

To be honest Habbo might as well close. The mute has caused so much **** that the .com hotel peaks at barely 2.5k which is gob smacking considering it's the main hotel for 5 countries, one of them being the US - one of the most populated globally.

It's just a shambles.

The runescape comment is interesting. All Sulake need to do is be able to identify a user who uses specific words immediately, then monitor their conversations to see where it's going. Job done.

Well it will peak low right now; we're still silent after three weeks. I'm confident that the visitor count will steadily increase once the mute has ended, but don't expect too much all at once. I daresay it will take some people at least a few days to even realise the hotel has been unmuted before they start logging on again. I'm pretty sure though that after a few weeks the numbers will be back up close to where they used to be.

I think the problem with some of it is nostalgia. People don't remember the problems caused by the Hobba system, they just want to be one. They don't remember the bad aspects of some of these features; there's a good reason most of them were removed. I can understand bringing back things like the in site news however.

Well I never wanted hobbas/xs returning and theres a good few members on here who are equally against a similar programme being introduced. There is always divided opinions on them though. Pretty sure not many would argue against the return of trained, local moderators or competitions and articles?!? The homepage is an absolute state currently with a lot of good features removed and a twitter feed shoved on. He communicates yea but on twitter, where he gets opinions from a small minority. Communication should be down through habbo. He blocks anyone he doesn't like and doesn't take any criticism. Plus, it annoyed me how he tripped on about habbo cms, when he should have been sorting out the appalling moderation/customer support.

You're right about the site. They shouldn't be encouraging users onto Twitter; in my opinion it only encourages the type of 'culture' they are trying to change. Sites like Neopets (probably not the best example now they user FB, but they still insist users are old enough to use the service and FB is intended at a target audience of over 13s) work so well because they completely cut out links to any other sites. They actively punish users who try to take topics elsewhere; this is what Sulake need to exercise within Habbo.

I wasn't on Habbo during the Hobba rein and I was too young to really remember the X's, I just thought they were gods an wanted to be one, so from a personal point I'd like to see similar return. However, a social media site/game more or less ran by its members isn't good. But tbh, it's a game and people shouldn't be stupid enough to go on cam and exchange details with faceless randomers.

I don't really mind the fact that the chat is going to be a little limited to begin with,
I think that's quite a good move,

Thanks for the link :)
