I was in town today getting my haircut so I decided to go into HMV to check out some anime DVDs. For one they had the anime section titled 'Manga DVDs'. Secondly, there was literally nothing good and the things that were good were pricey. They had a lot of the typical Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Death Note stuff. I'm not saying they are nessecarily bad shows but they could stock a bit more. I guess it is a business and that is what sells. There were a LOT of Studio Ghibli films and Satoshi Kon films which is great but the prices are insane. Paprika in HMV was 9 pounds which isn't that expensive but seeing as I bought it on Amazon for 3 pound about 2 days ago is a bit stupid. My copy was also brand new too. Also took a trip to Forbidden Planet, they have a HUGE manga collection. They also had some Japanese One Piece merch (cards, figures etc), all of the writing on it was in kanji too. Forbidden Planet have scrapped their DVD section though, well in the Belfast store at least. I couldn't seem to find anything. Didn't really buy much as I do all my shopping online but just a few words lol.

I still prefer the little manga/anime/game specialist store I found in Bangor. It's privately owned and has a huge collection of manga, figurines and they constantly order custom merch in from Japan too. It sucks they had to scrap their DVD section though as it wasn't selling but they still have a LOT more merch, clothing and manga than HMV/Forbidden Planet combined. Pretty impressive for a private business.

Also. I ordered all these to watch! Surprisingly I haven't watched any of them but the order total was like 40 pounds. Not bad.

Paprika.
Tokyo Godfathers.
My Neighbour Totoro
Akira
Grave of the Fireflies
Perfect Blue

Forbidden Planet down on Shaftesbury in London is like a gold mine for anime and manga. Pretty much the entire ground flood is dedicated to it. I even saw people cosplaying in there for seemingly no reason. Some great prices, too. There's also a really amazing comic shop nearby called Gosh! which sells a huge, unique selection of manga. All the HMVs here sell loads of anime too, along with the Fopp stores which are owned by HMV. Went in Forbidden Planet in Manchester and they had a huge selection of manga, too. I really only buy manga from Amazon and the Expo though, since they have deals on.

Also, in terms of Kon; Millennium Actress > Tokyo Godfathers > Paprika > Perfect Blue
Also also, should have gotten Ghost in the Shell instead of Akira.
Also also also, Grave of the Fireflies will literally make you want to die. Most depressing film I've ever seen. Really good, though.
Also also also also, Totoro is a humble masterpiece. It's very slice of life, don't go in with any expectations.

Probably blasphemy, but does anyone else feel anime needs to start being more daring and less Japanese?

I think it needs more of a western influence. Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are two of my favourites and to me they feel very western-influenced.

Anime is too stuck in its cliches and studios are so concerned about profit that they're too afraid to do anything new. It's a shame there aren't really any established indepedent animation studios that would fill this void.

Do they make much though? Judging by Bakuman the manga artists aren't exactly living the high life. Is it the same for the anime studios? I've seen some pictures of the studios and they don't look amazing. Especially with MADHOUSE who I thought was one of the best studios declaring it's financial issues earlier last year.

I'm unsure where to even start with Ghost in the Shell. There is so many series of it. What is the chronological order of it?

Ghost in the Shell is the first film, and is directed by Mamoru Oshii. He followed that up with Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence nearly a decade later which is, in my opinion, not as good as the first film but looks frickin' beautiful. Inbetween this Kenji Kamiyama directed an anime series called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which starts a new chronology in the Ghost in the Shell universe. He followed this up with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, and also three films, The Laughing Man, The Individual Eleven and Solid State Society. The first two are just condensed versions of the main arcs from the firt and second series respectively, but the last one is an original work to finish everything off. So basically, there's two different chronologies when it comes to Ghost in the Shell and the only thing that connects the two are the characters, so really you can start wherever you want. Personally, though, I think Oshii's films are a lot better. The first movie, especially, sets the benchmark for science fiction anime and was also a major influence on The Matrix. No Ghost in the Shell, no Matrix films, pretty much.

There's also Ghost in the Shell 2.0 which is just the original Ghost in the Shell film with 'better' animation. More CG, basically. I think they did that so it could look more like Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and be released on blu-ray.

Anyway, I'd recommend just checking out the original Ghost in the Shell film and go from there.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113568/
http://myanimelist.net/anime/43/Ghost_in_the_Shell

Also, you've seen Samurai Champloo, right? That's very Western influenced.

Anime provides a larger income than film when it comes to sales in Japan, and Japan have like the 5th largest film industry in the world. There's a lot of profit in anime, but as far as I'm aware, they make most of it from DVD and blu-ray sales, along with merchandising. Which I guess is why they're so afraid to produce anything unique.

Did do big reply but looked like an essay so deleted it xD

Best time to look for deals is the typical times boxing day new year. ive had some good bargins like
Bacano box set £8
Soul eater box set £12 and 1st 52 eps of Shippuden

Also import American sets. Funimation do cheap boxsets and even cheaper save sets (NHK, Air gear £12-14) and stuff like Trigun which is hard to find here is £20 for the series

And Kaiji i would expect an announcement end of the year for in 2013

And ignore this new Naruto film. 1st time skip One Piece movie overseen by Oda ;)? His desk and his design of Z "the strongest person" the strawhats have faced

Here's a 720p of EP3 of Avatar if anyone's yet to see it: http://ifile.it/51l0niv

Incredible episode! I'll use spoilers just in case:
Got off to a slow start but the animation is incredible and the locations are gorgeous. The nightfight with the chi-blockers was so stylized and it looked great. Also really pleased with the world development. Now we know that people outside the fire nation royal family are capable of producing lightning and that Republic City use firebenders to harness energy. That justifies the rapid advances in technology. It was also nice to see that Aang had told Tenzin about spirit bending. If the rest of the series can maintain that kind of quality then it should live up to everyone's expectations.

At this point I'm inclined to believe that Amon is just chi-blocking rather than spirit bending.

He probs can bend. Or his head honcho can bend. Or he's a spirit bender.

You frickin' called it, man. :P Could be some supreme chi-blocking like you say though, guess we'll have to wait and see.

Fantastic episode, the animation is absolutely brilliant and the choreography is mind-blowingly wonderful. Really starting to miss Aang's charisma though, and his voice! I need some back-story or a spirit version of him soon otherwise I'm going to go insane. And what's with that stupid voice-over guy recapping the previous episodes? Give me back the "Previously, on Avatarrrr..." they had in the original series.

To be honest, if a firebender burnt my face off and ruined my family I'd be pretty pissed about it. Fair enough if Amon wants to take down the benders, but he is quite clearly being shown as the villain of the series, so I think you have to take what he says with a grain of salt.

Just watched 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time'. I'd actually never watched it before and it was on Netflix so I thought why not. I watched the dubbed version which surprisingly very good. Just one question though, at the end when this happens:
As Chiaki leaves, he tells Makoto he will be waiting for her in the future to which Makoto responds that she will run towards him.
Does that mean they meet up sometime in the future of Makato's lifetime?

Episode 4 got uploaded to the Nick servers yesterday. Then people from /co/ started looking through loads of different URLs, just putting in random numbers at the end in the blind hope that they'd find the new ep. This was all possible because apparently Nick have zero security on their site lol. And as we know they managed to find the episode. Initially it came out in parts because that's how it was uploaded. There were DDL links for those individual parts but I checked just there and they've all been removed for copyright violation.

Also seeing as MADHOUSE are doing HxH. I guess it's unlikely there will be Ippo in the next year or two. Unless HxH ends. Or unless they can do more than 1 series a time :'(
I'm really hoping for a movie/OVA for the release of the 1000th chapter at the end of this year.

It's great, it actually managed to slow down on my computer during some parts which NEVER happens.

Anyway, Mirai Nikki is.. interesting. Over the top violence mixed with creepy weird stalker love. AND ******* EYE DARTS.

Avatar is better than anime.

Anyway, episode five...

AH! HAVEN'T YOU HURT ME ENOUGH, WOMAN? Bolin is kinda filling the Sokka void, and I have to wonder if they named Mako after Iroh's voice actor who passed away after recording the second season of the original series. His name was Mako Iwamatsu, but he was simply known as Mako. Also, pro-bending is seriously cool and I can't believe they're getting into the romance so fast. It took Aang fifty episodes to get that kiss. I guess him and Korra are very different though. Also, big awwwh for Bolin and his breakdown. I hope he doesn't give up on Korra so easily.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3ktnumSS61qbi8wdo4_250.gif

Also, I never noticed that statue in the other episode was of Zuko. Major goose bumps.

Anyway the episode was well good. I'm glad they got the love out of the way. Actually laughed when Bolin saw them kissing and just straight up started crying. Was expecting the traditional, feel bad and walk away silently, passively bringing it up later.

Actually nah, i'm pretty good. Yourself?

Also Niall!; I finally finished Mirai Nikki. That ending....

I don't even know. It was pretty damn action packed, and really quite strange. I thought some bits seemed a bit 'random' in the series but overall pretty good. It was nice seeing all the other participants and how their lives changed. I liked how the ending kind of showed how happiness is different for everyone, and even with all Yuki's dreams, he still wasn't happy.

Oh also, there was apparently a bit in the manga that they didn't show in the anime, and I think it was that the 3rd world Yuno broke through the world's with a hammer (or something like that) and came to visit him, and showed the conversation n all.

Niall!
09-05-2012, 03:52 PM
Yeah I heard, I haven't read it. Must do so now.

There was a hint of it at the end of the series with the text message and the voice. If you think about it nothing in the serious was random (apart from the eyeball costume man) just the work of 2nd world Yunos manipulation.

That's true I suppose.

One thing I am confused about though, Murmur was created as Yuno's servant when she became God right? So the Murmur that we see in most of the series is the first world Murmur, that makes sense. However at the end, another Murmur comes out from being locked away (the 2nd world one), but Yuno hadn't become a God yet, so why does the second world Murmur exist?

And if she wasn't Yuno's servant and I just misheard/read that, then why does she have such a strong alliegance to her?

Speaking of which, why did the second world Murmur also have that alliegance?

Wait unless Deus created Murmur, but when Yuno became God, Murmur followed Yuno instead. That would explain the alleigance and the reason why there's 2 murmurs.

Okay I just answered it myself, but I was sure that they said Yuno created her.

Also, should I watch the original Dragonball or is it optional?

Southe,

Right

HxH
it should but won't as MangaUK don't like commiting to long series (DBZ and Fairytale being exceptions) and if there was a UK release there would be no Blu ray release which is what im wanting so ill just hope for a US release.

One Piece
Apparently Toei ask alot for each season and Mangauk dont see it making a profit back, as with the commiting to a almost 550 ep series. Tho they said the movies could be a possibility and MangaUK's deal with DBZ is meant to help there relationship with Toei. Problem is tho dvds have been getting released since 2007. I have them all. and now there releasing collection sets with 26 eps for £14 which manga would charge £15-7 for 13. People from UK who want OP on dvd should focus on buying the US sets to increase the chance of more One Piece.
US > One Piece anime - digital manga
UK > Tshirts & Games (US is getting the new ps3 game but digital only where as we're getting boxed)

DragonBall
Kai isnt worth watching unless you have seen the dub in my opinion. the dub cast is all changed and its more accurate to the japanese thats the only good points.
I would say watch DB then Z

Also are you planning to watch dub or Jp? Only thing i could find on youtube that was in japanese -.- everything i found was kai and its not as good as Z.

Ikr, in the manga the fight was brutal, Tommyrod bit Toriko's hand off but in the anime he only shot those egg bombs.

Good things about this week's Korra: Lin earthbending by touch alone. Writers avoiding a boring 'simple misunderstanding' cliche. Tenzin almost not being completely useless for once. Korra character development.
Bad things: Horribly inappropriate mechs which don't fit the tone of the show at all. I can't tell you how badly I hope that they don't become a recurring feature.

Korra episode seven seemed a little melodramatic and forced. Kinda like some of the episodes in book one of the first series, which was a little disappointing. Great to see Lin actually using Toph vision though, but why the hell doesn't she use it all the time? She could have seen the equalists coming in episode six, she could have known Sato was lying and she could have felt the underground factory straight away. All she needed to do was take off her metal shoes. Too much dilly-dallying in this episode. Holy hell Tenzin is amazing, though. Definitely the best bender this series. Need moar Tenzin!

Recently joined the Anime/Manga society at my university. There's a guy who's mad about One Piece and Hajime No Ippo. He's pretty big and so far from the typical anime stereotype it's funny. He's a funny guy too. He said he's been watching anime for 12 hours (he's 21) and is currently watching like 9 ongoing weekly series lol, insane!

I think studying defeats the purpose of exams an tests. It's suppose to be a test of your understanding of the subject and what you have learned not how much information you crammed in the night before.

And DVDs could always be your reward after an exam ;) remember planet axel is American DVDs tho bargains 26 eps of one piece for £14

As I told my mate the top 3 shonen use to be called the big 3 etc but that's when op was selling just a little bit more. There is no more big 3 there's one piece an the other 2. And even then bleach wasn't on the top 10. One Piece is the king unfaire to group it with naruto.

Also I said I wanted to write a book. Mamoru oshii just wrote one about a zombie hunter >.<

I dont even know what to say other than the councilmen are actually useless except for Tenzin, and holy****bloodblending. I knew **** was going to go down when he had that waterfall behind him, **** always goes down when a waterbender is near water. Tarrlok is obviously related to the fella from the flashbacks and was taught how to bloodbend from him (unless he is him :OOO, but then I dont see that being possible). Either way, crazy episode and next week is gonna be so good! Also here's the flashbacks imgs if anyone wanted. http://imgur.com/a/gnwj6#0

Animation was pretty superb in this week's Korra. I'm a bit miffed that everyone and their mother seems to be able to conjure lightning nowadays considering all of 3 people were capable of it in TLA but I suppose it's necessary to justify the technological advancement.

Also my current prediction is that:Tarrlok is Amon's son or brother. The way he reacted when Korra accused him of being exactly like Amon seemed to touch a raw nerve.

I like it because it just handled things well, unlike a lot of shonen where I tend to like the ideas but then to hate the execution. Fairy Tale was a good example, with the Dragon Slayer magic working by metaphysically becoming a dragon, then instead of the cool idea they focused on crap.

I found this on tumblr, it shows some scenes from Inception which are identical to Paprika. Paprika was the original Inception for me. http://theeindian.tumblr.com/post/17531144135/paprika-hah-inception-copied-the-best-anime

Speaking of which, Paprika has an awesome soundtrack.

I'm behind on Korra by about 4 episodes. Saving them for a binge after exams to cure my depression, most likely failed most of them due to a hectic course schedule! Always got resits.

Been listening to a lot of the original Naruto soundtrack. It was made by the same guy who did the Mushishi soundtrack. You can really notice it, some of the songs are so peaceful.

£60 o.o some bad news for you.

£14 boxset, and due to it being in the S.A.V.E line usually means it didnt sell well enough and there about to lose the license so trying to make a quick sale. also means they wont be picking up any future releases. And UK dvd releases always depend on US releases and how they do

Yeah that's the Region 1 box-set. There are no box-sets for Region 2. I'm picky and I want all my DVDs to be Region 2.
I got these ones. Volume 4 cost me £35... (very rare)

Yea its R1. Why i like to get from both R1-R2, I got Trigun boxset R1 when it was oop here, Quite a few series which are rare here or singles you get boxsets over there. Wee bit shopping around and then you can buy more. Then theres the whole Dvd Vs BD side to it.

Couldnt find a better quote but yea. Romance in One Piece is basically Adventure.

- A strong, sometimes short-lived attachment, fascination, or enthusiasm for something: a childhood romance with the sea.
- A mysterious or fascinating quality or appeal, as of something adventurous, heroic, or strangely beautiful: "These fine old guns often have a romance clinging to them"
- A long medieval narrative in prose or verse that tells of the adventures and heroic exploits of chivalric heroes: an Arthurian romance.

Holy mother of **** at Avatar today.

I don't even know where to start. This wasn't even the finale and SO MUCH HAPPENED. Tenzin was a complete badass, as was most of the group when fighting the mechs. Meelo's fartbending was way more hilarious than I thought it'd be, and the other kids are pretty badass. Asami's jealousy is making me pretty suspicious of her though, like she's gonna double cross them or something. Either way, I think her and mako's relationship seems kinda...immature. Yeah. Don't really like it.

The 2 absolute best bits of the episode however were at the end. Lin losing her bending gave me goosebumps, and the entire scene was so brilliantly done. The shot where she's saying "I won't tell you anything" was drawn so well, and the music fit perfectly when she fell to the ground. ******* loved it. Of course, it also made me super sad that she lost her bending :( Hopefully they figure out a way to get it back. And the second bit was zuko's grandson/son with his voice named mother****** Iroh! Hope he turns out to be a badass, and that we see some of the other children (aang's children and zuko's daughter).

Anyway, 1 hour finale next week. Can't wait.

Badass air bending by Tenzin, awesome Fart bending by Meelo and a new General Iroh a la Zuko's voice actor made the episode for me. He better play Pai Sho and drink tea. Hopefully we'll get some more flashbacks and therefore more Sokka and Aang next week.

Someone should go make an Avatar thread in the film tv bit probably be more people that watch it.

Someone told me that don't watch anime because they didn't like Dragonball Z. It offended me a lot. I don't know why. Dragonball is a great series but for me there are a lot more anime that triggered a lot more emotions from mere. A lot of other things taught me some life lessons.

My friend is a big DB fan and say its the best series etc, where as i disagree and we normaly get into a DB vs OP debate. As shown in Gintama it follows a pattern bad guy, train, beat bad guy, bad guy becomes friend. Why i feel its more suited as a test to new people to anime. Easy to get into, simple plot then its easier for people to move onto other series.

Is bad tho how people think anime is DBZ, YGO, Pokemon. Then when you see the casual fan and ask what series there into Bleach, Naruto. "what about One Piece" Lol no. When i have been bored on gone on habbo just to kill some time ive met a few people into anime and not one has like OP and i get the usual response. "DBZ Bleach Naruto Fairy Tail Death Note"

I want there to be an Anime boom and interest to pick up. Need more anime on tv and not just Ghibli films.

I'd love another one of those situations where the avatar takes on the appearance and personality of a previous avatar like during the winter solstice (Or was it the equinox?) when Roku steps and destroys the entire temple.

In the long run, I think anime has probably had less of an impact on me. I find a lot of it is way too overly melodramatic to even begin to relate to or take anything from, but there are series that will stick with me through life, namely more down-to-earth anime such as Nana. I can see why people stereotype anime and it's fandom, however. A lot of it really is dire.

Oh man, that general Iroh VA. WE ZUKO 2.0 NOW.

Nice episode this week. It's good that they've made use of the time they have. I'd much rather that people complain about rushed pacing in Korra than have to stomach filler episodes used to save animation budget like in TLA. It makes waiting for each new episode all the better when you know that it's going to have some substance to it.

Although the pacing sits well with me, it is a shame that the main cast are all so flat. Tenzin, Lin, Asami and especially Tarlok are all pretty well fleshed out whereas Mako and Bolin are extremely dry. As is Korra to a lesser extent. I sometimes feel that the VA for Korra herself is pretty lackluster with her line delivery. You could also argue that Amon doesn't have much depth but he has an excuse for being mysterious.
