I noticed we don't have a general discussion thread for anime. We have one for manga and we used to have one for anime, but that kind of died out. So here's a general discussion thread for anything relating to anime. Discuss whatever anime you're watching now, whatever episode you watched last, post any questions, etc.

I finally got around to watching Rebuild of Evangelion: 1.0 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE. The first in a series of four movies which retell the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series. Watching it with current, up-to-date animation is goooood! Of course, a few things have been cut from the TV series but it still works surprisingly well. Judging from the trailer for the second movie quite a few things have been added as well. Which is great news because I'm liking what I see.

Dont watch Monster, the dub is horrible and boy do I mean horrible it sounds as if it was recorded of a phone. Monster is good very dark and long storyline but it drags on a little.
They changed the first opening of Naruto for the dub, that sucks the first Naruto opening owns that in every way possible, ROCKS ftw.

The best ending that comes to mind is actually Soul Eater ED 4. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqrhJWaLxE0)

Best parody opening - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWRCSFLvxw0 :D

I watched the first four episodes of Monster last month, they were pretty good but I can see how it may drag on a little. I might just read the manga since it's done by the same guy who did 20th Century Boys. Although there'd be so much dialogue...

Trigun is fantastic. It's also one of few series where the protagonists reason for not wanting to kill anyone despite being a super awesome mega skilled gunslinger is actually believable and makes sense. An iconic hero in Vash, and an iconic villain in both Legato (the most badass character EVER) and Knives. If you think it's good now then wait 'til later. It doesn't get any better than Trigun.

Right now I'm watching Seirei no Moribito after having it on-hold for a while. No idea why I had it on-hold though because it's amazing. One of, if not the best fantasy anime I've ever seen. Yes, better than Claymore!

When one villain is called Knives and when the other can control people with his mind you know they're going to be awesome. Met Nicholas D. Wolfwood yet? Another absolutely fantastic character right there, and just wait until the Gung-Ho Gun's are introduced! Wow, I just realised how good the characters in Trigun are. I'm so gonna buy it on DVD when I go to the Expo.

The best anime based in England is the movie Steamboy in my opinion. The dub in that movie is awesome as well, they actually got English people to do most of it! Alfred Molina (Doc Ock from Spider-man) voices one of the main characters, and bloody Patrick Stewart voices one of the other main characters! Anna Paquin (Rogue from X-Men) also voices the protagonist with a very convincing English accent. This backs up my point - English dubs are goooooood!

DUBS VS SUBS
No arguging just challenging points and not the person, gogogog.

As a rule. i will always watch a series Subbed first. Only Dubs i give a chance are the ones i buy on dvd. But mostly they end up being really bad so i stick to the subs. However, Funimation Dubs i enjoy greatly. I think they do a great job at picking the voices and giving us uncut titles. With a Funimation dvd i will Watch the Dub 1st then Sub. Funimation usually keeps everything just changes the voices so not alot to complain about.

Companys like 4kids that give them the worst kind of voice and heavely edit out i dont like. So really i dont mind either its just the people who choose Dubs and give really rubbish excuses. or even people who wont try the dub and will watch the sub version.

My main reason for watching Subs before dubs is. Thats the way it was made and meant to be seen. Dubs i think is just an excuse for me to rewatch it again and see a diffrent version. for example DBZ. Dub and Sub are completley diffrent dialogue wise so gives its rewatch value. where as Naruto i just sit there dispointed. And One Piece (4kids Ver. Funi's is on par with the sub imo) just makes mewant to smash the tv.

So yeah. Enjoy the wall of text.

I prefer subs, without any doubt in my mind. I find them to be more engaging, better acted and directed and that Japanese seiyu's are a lot more passionate and talented and are able to bring out the characters true personalities a great deal better than American voice actors/actresses. Japanese seiyu's actually work with the director during the production of a series, movie or game. They are directed by the man in charge, the man who knows what hes doing and knows what he wants to create. American voice actor's are directed by an unfamiliar and forever changing sound director who hasn't the slightest idea of what he's doing nor has he any vision or influence over what he wants to create. Theres the problem. If the Japanese tried dubbing an American cartoon it would suck. It's because they wouldn't be involved in the actual production nor would they be directed by someone who understands the chemistry of the cartoon or by someone who knows whats going on. It's not just with anime, every dub sucks because of the lack of or missing input from the original creator or director. To produce a good dub, you need to work with someone who understand the product, some who has a clear vision of what is needed and what they want to create. You can't leave the dub up to someone who is unfamiliar with the product! But they have no choice to leave it up to someone else because of language problems, hence why dubs will always suck... and that is entirely my opinion, people.

Southe,

And yes i agree with that you said, thats why i cant stand anything viz dubs. But yes while One Piece was casting for the new dub. Toei had a say in it aswell, but i think thats jus because thats there best show and didnt want it getting ripped apart again lol.

I would like to see an american show dubbed in jp.

Nope, I haven't even heard the dub for Welcome to the NHK. I know Chris Patton voices Satou though, and he was amazing in Guyver. Although his character in Guyver and his character in NHK are very different, I doubt I'd like him in Welcome to the NHK. I think Chris Patton is a good voice actor sometimes, but I've heard some dubs from him which are just terrible.

Damn you, give me my editing time back. Guess I'll have to post again...

I just remembered that Chris Patton also voiced the main character in The Place Promised in Our Early Days, which he was good in. His role in The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Guyver are quite comparable comparable though, while Satou requires very different acting. I fear Chris Patton would probably make the character more emotional than he should be. Satou doesn't have real emotion, he has a kind of strange, insane, misunderstood emotion. I read an interview with Patton talking about his role as Satou a while back and he mentioned the fact he used to be a shut in really helped him in his dub role. A normal person might think thats a good, positive comment, but that is bad. He shouldn't be using knowledge gained due to his life experiences to bring out Satou's character. Satou is nothing like a normal hikkikomori, and can't be anything like Chris Patton was when he was a shut in. Chris Patton seemed to understand the emotional side of hikkikomori's - good - but that's not how Satou should be acted. Although I'm saying all this without having listened to the dub, I could be very wrong. :P Anyway, that's just how I feel about Chris Patton voicing Satou. He maybe has it in him, but to me it seemed like he took the wrong approach.

It does sound good because i was thinking about buying it but the singles put me off. but manga entertainment suck... better not get a sub the dub again... Or would they just copy funimations dvd but have there name as the what ever its called xD

Anyway. One Piece is to be streamed alongside FMA on Funimations site they are putting up dub episodes aswell so can watch and see the diffrence between the two. Only for US and canda tho have to tinker with Firefox settings to view them.

I'm about halfway through Texhnolyze and it's pretty safe to say that even electronic brain pancake crystal elderly. It's totally different from anything I've seen and I'd guarantee it's different from anything you've seen if you watch it. The way it's shot is confusing to say the least, it jumps frantically from character to character, many if not most of whom are never introduced formally so you're left to deduce everything from the visuals due to the fact that there is very little dialog, in the first episodes at least. The story is still kicking off and all though I somewhat know whats happening there's no explanation why or where it's going; at all. You'll need to be firing on all cylinders to actually make any sense of it, still I'll persevere just to see what happens. ;)

Sounds pretty good to me. Also sounds like a series thats fairly distant from the viewer since it doesn't really explain anything. That was the case in Ergo Proxy and I loved that. It's not like Bleach where you're always following the good guys, everything is explained to you and you always happen to be everywhere at the same time. I'll probably check Texhnolyze out, since it also has a cool name. The fact you say there is very little dialog also interests me. If I see the boxset at the Expo this weekend, I'll buy it.

Aslo, I just found out that Nightmare (the Japanese band that done the opening and ending for Death Note) make a cameo in the 20th Century Boys movie and I never even noticed.

It's all an illusion. Saki must have been injected with something as she was making her way up to the room. Akira fell unconscious because of his wounds and Kuroha bandaged him up. Kuroha can't really have wings, it doesn't fit with the rest of the series. Also, the person Kuroha took with her probably was Osugi. On her phone it said 'super illusion material, three varieties' so disguising his face must have been one of the three illusions. It really isn't that confusing. RAGE :@

Funimation was about to start simucasting One Piece on its site. 1 hr after the JP release. But someone hacked Funi's site and got the new ep a day before it as even on jp tv.

"As anime fans know, FUNimation Entertainment planned under the authorization of Toei Animation, Fuji Television, Shueisha for the first ever online simulcast of the series ‘One Piece’ tonight at 9:00 pm CDT., just one hour after its premiere on Japan’s Fuji Television. Unfortunately, in the last 24 hours we have determined that the FUNimation servers were compromised, even though we employ strict security standards. An unknown individual accessed and posted episode 403 online and as a direct result of this illegal act, all U.S. and Canadian fans will be deprived of access to this great anime series for the immediate future. We will use the full extent of our efforts to locate and prosecute the perpetrators and will provide updates in this most serious matter."

Annoyed, lots of people on One Piece forums are raging lol. Hopefully gets sorted out soon. I think its mainley because it was leaked before it aired on jp tv. O well.

Now I own the super ultra awesome platinum edition boxset I can watch it all again but this time in director's cut. :D By the way, don't expect to understand the series first time watching it. Infact, don't even try to understand. I assume you'll need at least three full viewings before it all makes sense. I also suggest you watch End of Evangelion after episode 24 and then watch episode 25 and 26 after. End of Evangelion is an alternate ending which is one hundred times better than the original one.

The fact that it's the number one best selling manga ever doesn't really prove anything. :P Look at how much Naruto has sold but there isn't a single person who frequents this forum that seems to like it. I definitely recommend the limited eiditon if you're a fan of the series. I thought it was worth it purely for the extras that came with it. :P The boxset itself also has magnets hidden in the case so when you close the lid it shuts nice and tight. Now thats high quality! Viz keep releasing like three or four volumes of Naruto at a time, so thats why Naruto is super fast but they haven't done that with Bleach for some reason. Bleach is still pretty average in the release department in my opinion. Claymore is only one single volume behind the Japanese releases, but thats because the manga seemed to be on hiatus for a year which allowed the English releases to catch up. :P Viz release Gintama every two months instead of three, and they are doing the same for 20th Century Boys so thats rather fast. Although they could do it much faster! 20th Century Boys is finished, why can't they just release all 24 volumes within a year.

Lmao, when I looked at the back of the cover for End of Evangelion yesterday to see what extras there were it said 'Audio Commentary by Amanda Winn Lee (English Language Director and Voice of Rei Ayanami)'. I instantly gave it a look of disgust and said to myself "So directors are also voice actors these days... shows how understaffed they are. No wonder they're always crap." What really pains me though is that companies like ADV who are always passionate about anime and try their best to release series with original Japanese extras are in serious money problems, but companies like Manga Entertainment who honestly don't really seem to care are doing alright for money. It doesn't add up. I talked to the ADV staff at the expo and they are such awesome guys. My friend asked how much the Utawarerumono Boxset was and one of the guys told him the price but then started talking about how amazing the series was in a really informative and friendly way. I've seen and love the series to death and I was just standing there nodding in agreement with him. :P Also, the boxset was only £25 - for 26 episodes, plus four booklets with interviews of the Japanese staff and a ton of extras. Now thats the kind of prices I like.

Well then I have a question. Both Manga Entertainment and Funimation are working together to release Claymore. How will that turn out then? :P

I just checked out my Gurren Lagann DVD and the dub is so painful to listen to. They don't prenounce Simon how you think they would, they prenounce it see-moan and it just doesn't work well with all the other English dialogue. The dub for the Giga Drill Beaker was sounding really good until Kamina said Giga Drill Break... IT'S BREAKER FOR GOD SAKE NOT BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also Simons voice actor sounds way too mature. Doesn't sound like a kid at all. Yoko's voice is also terrible, but all female American anime voice actors sound the same so thats to be expected. Nia's voice isn't toooooo bad. They tried to get it close to her Japanese voice, but some of her lines just sound so dumb. But atleast they tried! Good effort, but a failure nevertheless.

The subtitles kind of annoy me as well. Even in the Japanese version the subtitles said 'Giga Drill Break' when it's clearly Giga Drill Breaker. Also, on my Disbuster DVD the subtitles said 'Buster Beam Slash' when the move is clearly Buster Beam Slice. :( Not impressed with Beez' subtitles. They translate the title as Gurren Lagann as well when the first bit of Japanese clearly says Tengen Toppa. Why did they leave out the Tengen Toppa part? That's what makes it epic! WHY!? Why are fansubs so superior to official DVDs? They're official dammit atleast do a good job! Beez is a subsidiary of Bandai as well, and they are a Japanese company. Whhhhhhhhhy!?

Southe,
05-06-2009, 04:15 PM
Well Funimation have made the Dub and made the subs etc so it should be the exact same as the american dvd. All manga ent will be doing is distrubuting it. Like Revelations is doing with Full Metal Alchemist. And funny are good witht he subs.

They translate about 90% of it and then special words or move names are all kept intact. unless theres a good translation for it. Example would be

One Piece luffy says Gomu Gomu no ???? when he attacks. Now if you were to translate it, would be Rubber Rubber. which sounds a bit silly so Gum Gum sounds better. Robin attacks are all in french. so there kept in french.

HOPEFULLY im right in thinking MANGA are just selling it here.. dont want them fiddiling and changing stuff. But tbh when the claymore set appears in the US ill just buy it from there. Would rather suppourt Funi and not MANGA. Only buying Naruto and Bleach from them now. and im not planning on buying the filler. so its 1 more naruto dvd then it will just be bleach

On ep 21 of NGE, i do like it, and i can kind of see where its going, but im wondering what the ending is! Shall finish it this week

The ending is lame when viewed by itself, but when viewed along with The End of Evangelion they both go together to make one damn spectacular conclusion. The End of Evangelion also has one of the best and most memorable fight scenes ever in my opinion. Which I also consider to be one of the most violent. I'm going to watch Evangelion again once I've finished college later this month and I actually can't wait. :P Heres (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH32Chen5Vo) the fight scene for anyone who wants to see it, but can't be bothered to watch the entire series.

Also, you might want to check out Rebuild of Evangelion. So far only the first of four movies are out, but it's a recreation of the series in movie format. Bigger budget, alternate scenes and up-to-date real nice looking animation. They didn't do a Dragon Ball Kai and attempt to improve the look of the series, they actually made it all again from scratch. Evangelion looks sooooo good with todays animation.

Evangelion looks sooooo good with todays animation.mmmh alright, but when would u say i watched the end of evangelion? after i finished the series?

Before I would have said watch The End of Evangelion before episode 25 and 26 (the series ending), but now I'd say watch the entire series first and then after that watch The End of Evangelion. It's best to watch things how they were intended to be watched and also that way you can end on a good note, because there isn't really anything good about the series ending.

Well obviously things will be different since it's a different cut from the original, but director's cut is usually the best anyway. I think the ones I watched on YouTube were probably the original episodes. My DVD has both the original episodes and directors cut but I haven't watched it yet so I can't say for sure which is best, but they can't be much different anyway. Just stick with the directors cut, no point looking elsewhere.

I assume one of the NEETs that Akira gathered there wrote it. The Selecao killed Pantsu because one; he had found out classified information about the Selecao, two; he had one of their phones, and three; he found out some information of vital importance to Akira. Akira isn't being target persay, but I guess other Selecao are taking interest in him because hes going against the system, and he seemed to be quite a renowned Selecao before he wiped his memory. Pantsu was deciphering the information on the Selecao phone Akira gave him, and he seemed to find out something pretty dangerous on it.

Samurai Champloo is one of the best series ever made. Peace Maker Kurogane is another good samurai anime. Also, if you haven't seen Sword of the Stranger then you haven't lived.

You won't find them anywhere since all of the streaming websites were linking to the episodes on crunchyroll. Now cr have removed the episodes theres nothing to link to. Unless some people ripped them you're out of luck.

Not to mention it also has the best climax EVER. I can't really think of any other anime that comes close to being on par with Champloo's last few episodes. It's also one of very few animes where I actually stayed up all night watching it simply because every episode left you wanting more.

Sure. Rumbel are pretty slow but recently they've been releasing episodes at a decent pace.

I hope they get to episode 122 soon because I really want to watch the Screwdriver arc again. It's a masterpiece! I really wish I had ripped the episodes now. :P I ripped episode 113 but Rumbel subbed that the other day so its useless now. :eusa_wall

Chris, im baffled by the ending of NGE, explain or find me so info or soemthing plx D:

The last two episodes take place in Shinji's mindset because hes that ****** up after Kaworu destroys his psyche. Watch The End of Evangelion. A lot of people like to think that the events that happen in the movie are what is happening in the real world, while the events at the end of the series are obviously happening in Shinji's mind. Thats why I said the two work well together, but alone the series ending is lame.

Also... HOOOOOLY ****! The new trailer for the third 20th Century Boys movie is AWESOME! Damn, I'm so hyped but I haven't even seen the second movie yet. I thought the first was good, but the third looks fantastic! I need it now!

Eden of The East has 11 episodes and currently 10 have aired. The final episode will air Thursday and be subbed for Friday ;)
or you could watch Naruto, which is an awesome series minus the fillers. It has 220 episodes in Naruto but I watched to 120 because 120-220 are ALL fillers. And then after naruto there is shippuden which has 110 episodes or so at the moment and is still airing.

Eden has 11 episodes and a movie although it hasn't finished airing yet. Welcome to the NHK is a good choice, I also think it's better than Eden. Judging from what you've seen and like you probably wouldn't like Eden anyway. If I had to recommend something though, I'd say Baccano. Why the hell is no one on this forum giving it a chance!? It's seriously one of the best series ever made. It has 13 episodes and an OVA which is 3 episodes long. The story is amazing, the characters are some of the best I've come across...
