The name rings a bell but upon further investigation it doesn't appear to be anything I've seen. It has a pretty average score on MyAnimeList, though the plot does sound interesting. I like things set during fedual Japan and you can't go wrong with Madhouse's animation. I still can't recommend Samurai Champloo enough though. You simply will not be disappointed with that series. :D

You finished it? To this day I still think it has one of the best climaxes in any anime series. What a finale.

Madhouse animated EyeShield 21, that makes them awesome

Well I would say they are more awesome for animating Hajime no Ippo, Death Note, Monster, Kaiji, Trigun and all of Satoshi Kon's films as well as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars. They have also worked on a few things with Gainax. I'd say they are hands down the best animation studio.

Toei.. OP, DB, Fist of the north star, Dr slump, Saint Seiya, Slam dunk, Digimon, there all pretty big series.

Bones is good aswell.

Bones are very good but sometimes inconsistant and I think Toei are a little rough around the edges.

My top five animation studios are as follows...

1. Madhouse (Death Note, Hajime no Ippo)
2. Gainax (Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
3. Studio 4°C (Mind Game, Kigeki)
4. Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, Higashi no Eden)
5. Sunrise (Gintama, Cowboy Bebop)

Just thought I'd let you know Ryu that a friend from school I introduced to anime about 4-5 months ago completed One Piece today. He watched it on his own accord, no recommendations and began watching the series about 2 weeks ago. 400-500 episodes in 2 weeks is impressive, dedicated lol. He says he really likes it, might give it a shot.

Southe,
19-03-2010, 11:11 PM
well you should theres a reason it sells more than naruto and Bleach combined. and if you do that makes 4-5 people watching it now.

Samurai Champloo Composer Jun 'Nujabes' Seba Passes Away ~ Aww i enjoyed the music in SC.

Cover art for gintama dvds looks meh. gonna be like £20 and the 2nd set of gintama dvds is due out in june. that will be 26 ep atleast we will catch up pretty fast.

And so you should. 50's is when they go inot the grand line and it all starts up 1st 50 ep's are basically just introducing the characters etc.

The Sci-Fi London Anime All-Nighter lineup has been announced.

- Redline
- Musashi
- Bleach The Movie – The Diamond Dust Rebellion
- Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works

Soooo disappointed Evangelion 2.0 isn't up there, nor is Summer Wars. Very disappointed, in fact. I wouldn't mind seeing Musashi, but the other films look pretty mediocre and I've seen Diamond Dust Rebellion which is utter crap. I think I'll actually skip the all-nighter this time. Damn it. Oh well, theres still the Expo.

No. Just... no. Diamond Dust Rebellion is rubbish. Redline does look pretty good, but I'm in no rush to see it and I have no interest in the Fate/Stay Night movie. I'd much rather watch the series.

Sci-Fi London have dubbed it the 'MANGA All-Nighter' because all of the films are being distributed by MANGA Entertainment, but then why the hell don't they have Summer Wars? That's being released later this year by MANGA and has already been shown all over the UK! There was even a free screening in London at the beginning of March.

I think over the Easter break I'm going to finish up on EyeShield 21 and Gintama then continue with One Piece. How many episodes does Gintama have and when is the expected resume date for the anime, I'm assuming around a year and a bit. You think when Gintama re-airs it'll be in 1080P 16:9?
I've took a small peak and One Piece in HD, the animation looks so much better!

Naruto 10th Anniversary Drawings (http://mangaxanime.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/naruto-10th-anniversary-tribute-drawn-by-other-popular-manga-artists/)

Though I think Ryuzaki has higher quality images of the One Piece ones. Also, looking forward to the Bleach 10th Anniversary sketches next year and the Gintama ones in 2013! They should be quite interesting.

I still think Obata's ones are the best. His Naruto drawing is amazing. Also, I never knew Sorachi could draw such nice sketchy art. He does a cool Usopp. Both of Kubo's ones look like alternate versions of Ichigo, haha.

Takehiko Inoue and Masashi Tanaka are the best manga artists in my opinion, followed cloesly by Takeshi Obata.

Also, Nick Simmons commented on the whole plagiarism thing.

"Like most artists I am inspired by work I admire. There are certain similarities between some of my work and the work of others. This was simply meant as an homage to artists I respect, and I definitely want to apologize to any Manga fans or fellow Manga artists who feel I went too far. My inspirations reflect the fact that certain fundamental imagery is common to all Manga. This is the nature of the medium. I am a big fan of Bleach, as well as other Manga titles and I am certainly sorry if anyone was offended or upset by what they perceive to be the similarity between my work and the work of artists that I admire and who inspire me."

The dub is pretty good, as is the case for all Ghibli movies. Christian Bale provides the voice for the main character. Howl's Moving Castle is one of the more weaker Miyazaki films though. The story is a little vague and other than the animation I don't feel it has a lot going for it. You guys should have checked out a couple of Ghibli movies when Film4 had their Ghibli season last month. They showed Nausicaa, My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke among others, which are all amazing. Also, please tell me you guys have atleast seen Spirited Away?

Yea but thats just 1 site which i have friends who dont use it, and i could be wrong but its a western site so not many japanese people will be on it. Brotherhood is high up because it's good. Simply as. Loads of people vote on stuff on that website, doesn't make a difference if they're Japanese or American, or if your friends are on it, it's an average. On average, Brotherhood is ranked 28th because so many people love the series and rate it 10s and 9s. One Piece of course will get people who love it like you, but also people who see it as a standard series and give it 6 or 7. It's just that more people see One Piece as average than anime like Brotherhood, and thus it's lower.

Ryuzaki, One Piece has 57 volumes and has been publishing since 1997. Gintama has only 33 volumes and has only been published since 2003. One Piece has a six year head start on Gintama. I'm sure if the sales for One Piece were frozen for six years Gintama would be pretty damn close to catching up. Also, its not like sales actually prove how good a series is, but did you miss the best selling anime DVDs of 2009? The Gintama OVA was up there at number one, and other Gintama DVDs have also been featured high up in the charts every year. Gintama BEST also won animation album of the year and the first and third light novels have also been the top selling light novels in their respective years. I'm sure the movie will also be at the top of the box office. Weigh the facts and statistics before stating that Gintama has 'nothing on One Piece', because it clearly does.

Also, just to clear things up - you have to have seen at least 1/5 of a series on MyAnimeList for your score to count. People have to have seen 41 episodes of Gintama for their scores to count, thats why the series is ranked so high. People who don't like Gintama aren't likely to watch more than 41 episodes and everyone who does watch 41 episodes is probably a fan and has rated the series fairly high. The reason it wasn't ranked as high before was that it didn't have a set number of episodes, so the rank was generated by calculating the average of all the scores (or perhaps a set number of scores) given.

If One Piece ended where it is now people have to have seen 89 episodes for their score to count. Anyone who has seen more than 89 episodes is going to be a big fan of the series, so the score will increase a great deal.

Brotherhood is high up because it's good. Simply as. Not denying its good. Loads of people vote on stuff on that website, doesn't make a difference if they're Japanese or American, or if your friends are on it, it's an average. I meant it as the site is typicaly aimed at westerners, The japanese probably have there own sites like this aswell MAL just gives the opinion of a certain majority of people who use the site. On average, Brotherhood is ranked 28th because so many people love the series and rate it 10s and 9s. One Piece of course will get people who love it like you, but also people who see it as a standard series and give it 6 or 7. Like NS said it's to do with the number of eps people have seen aswell. Brotherhood had it easy because it only started a year ago and people probably where told good things about it before or had seen it and watched this where as OP its harder to get into so not as many people have tried it or put it on hold or havent voted etc. It's just that more people see One Piece as average than anime like Brotherhood, and thus it's lower. More peoples ratings get taken into account on FMA than OP.
Much easier replying like that, Anyway dont mean to sound liek a fanboy. FMA is in my top 5 animes. Like it almost as much as OP.

Ryuzaki, One Piece has 57 volumes and has been publishing since 1997. Gintama has only 33 volumes and has only been published since 2003. One Piece has a six year head start on Gintama. Didnt mean for it to sound liek i was bashing on Gintama just used it as an example since naruto wasn't on the list and Gintama is a popular series aswell. Was just showing how i think OP is on a diffrent league to the others like Alex said about FMA, Was only meant as example. Gintama is 2nd fave series anyway D: Also, its not like sales actually prove how good a series is, Your right it dosen't. But when your typical SJ series is selling just over 200,000 copys per volume and OP is selling Over 2 million it must be doing something right. And OP is insanley popular its what dragonball was 10 years ago. But yes i agree it dosen't prove fully that its better seeing as i like serries just as much as OP that dosent sell as much. I'm sure if the sales for One Piece were frozen for six years Gintama would be pretty damn close to catching up. Find out the average sale of a Gintama Volume, X it by 4volumes per year and then x it by 6Years and add it to Gintamas total sales. Thats the basic way but obviously the movie might hype up the manga sales. but did you miss the best selling anime DVDs of 2009? The Gintama OVA was up there at number one, and other Gintama DVDs have also been featured high up in the charts every year. Gintama BEST also won animation album of the year and the first and third light novels have also been the top selling light novels in their respective years. I'm sure the movie will also be at the top of the box office. Weigh the facts and statistics before stating that Gintama has 'nothing on One Piece', because it clearly does. Like i said gintama wasn't in the has nothing on OP. was meaning about Bleach and naruto mainly. I know about Gintama Best. OP opening 11 single was Best single if i recall. Didn't mean to sound like i was aiming at Gintama only used it as an example in manga sales cause naruto wasnt there.

Also, just to clear things up - you have to have seen at least 1/5 of a series on MyAnimeList for your score to count. Anyone who has seen more than 89 episodes is going to be a big fan of the series, so the score will increase a great deal. Speaking of which how far are you? you where in the teens last time you said. Paul is in the 80's now so if it was to end his vote would count lol. i would like OP to end and then start like a ONE Piece Z type show just to see how well it would do on the MAL list but at ame time i just want OP to be 1 big long series.

I think some series look quite interesting, mainly House of Five Leave, Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei and Hakuouki. I'll probably check them out eventually. House of Five Leaves is done by manglobe, the same guys who did Samurai Champloo and Ergo Proxy, so thats highest on my list. Urgh, K-ON got a second season. Kill me. That crap is dire. And why the hell are new seasons of Da Capo still being made? It's the same thing all over again. They've ruined it.

I still haven't finished EyeShield 21 because I know when I finish it I'm going to be so pessimistic. It has honestly been one of my favourite anime, ever. I dont know why, but everything seems to blend together right. The story, voice acting, music, art and basically everything else. The music is what I love the most though, every single piece is situated so right for each person and situated.
Kurita is a big, jolly fellow (Imagine a Japanese Mikey from Recess who is slightly tan) and this is his theme. They even have these real emotional scenes and they play it. Man :'(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH3D6-6l1u4

I've got about 30 episodes left and then about 30 chapters of Manga that continues and ends the series. The series ended due to not pulling enough sales. It pisses me off how good, intresting anime/manga get pulled early when they are so much better than stuff like Naruto.

@Neversoft - Ring ni Kakero 1 and Giant Killing are the two I'm interested in. I dont know why but I've been taking a huge favoring to Sports anime.

Once Evangelion 2.0 is released on DVD I think the score will boost right up as well, seeing as how many people are waiting for the DVD over the camrip. I tell ya, that damn list is like a soap opera.

I'm unbelievably hyped to see it in blu-ray quality. The animation is seriously mind blowing. Some of the scenes are just so wonderful to look at, not just because of how detailed and crisp the animation is, but because of the amount of movement, colour and just how brilliantly the scenes are constructed. The movies really are worlds apart from the series. Gainax know how to get things done. Aparrently the movies have been such a success that they're not limiting the budget on 3.0 and are hiring new staff as well as keeping all of the original staff to up the production quality. I can't wait to see what the final two movies and the great minds behind the franchise have to offer.

yea but even in america they don't get it, i know OP movie 8 was shown in a few selected cinemas but that was it.

Would be good if something like 2 hr anime block was on a channel. proper anime channel would be good aswell but if they actually got ahold of some decent shows. and have the dubbed and subbed channel. then you just have the dvd advertise after each episode. and you make a deal with book publishers like viz and do the "check out the manga" aswell. advertisement pays.

Ima go on Dragons Den rofl.

I wish they'd start taking anime seriously over here and air it in cinemas like they do in Japan.

If you actually look you'd find they do. Ponyo was in cinemas worldwide for at least two weeks straight with multiple showings each day a couple of months back, and in May Piccadilly's Apollo Cinema is having an Anime All-Nighter and in the same month London's BFI Southbank Cinema is holding an anime weekend where they are showing many anime films that have yet to be seen by most countries. Hell, England was the second place in the world (after Spain) to show King of Thorn last year. We got it months before even the Japanese did. Glasgow and Dublin have also had Anime Film Festival recently. The Glasgow Film Festival saw the British premiere of Evangelion 2.0, which aparrently had the audience cheering and applauding in praise. Anime isn't as hidden in this country as you may think - if you look it is there. Granted it isn't shown in mainstream cinemas (besides Miyazaki films) because there obviously isn't enough demand, but what do you expect? Especially with all the licensing and distribution issues that companies have to go through to get a hold of anime.

Southe,
12-04-2010, 11:10 PM
think he was meaning like proper releases for some movies. not just at anime specific events. like proper cinematic releases. What was the last movie to be shown in theatres before Ponyo?

And even in japan they dont do as well as youd expect them to do. Naruto,Bleach,OP films normaly make 6-10 Million yen.. or is it billion yen.. SW made 4,700,000,000/$53,000,000 so must be billion. but that still isnt much compared to films that get shown over here

~~

Just scimmed through my crappy SW cam rip. can;t wait for this in HD looks superb. Best animation for anything ive seen. my Gif probably dosen't give it justice. Also movie suffers from NBB (Nami's Big Boobs) which isnt a bad thing but still not as bad as movie 7 where slightest movement would make them bounce here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QodpMgXGqAo it was pretty bad

I thought you had already seen Haruhi? The order you watch it in is up to you but I'd recommend the broadcast order since I feel it has a much better pace than if you watch it chronologically. And yes, Kyoani would never give up the opportunity to make more Haruhi anime considering its popularity. The movie only came out two months ago though and the second series not long before it, so another movie or series might be a way off yet.

Also, its Suzumiya not Suzmiya. :P

On April 11, the 446th episode of the One Piece (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=836) television anime series recorded a Kantō-area television rating of 13.8% — the highest rating the series has earned since moving to its current Sunday 9:30 a.m. timeslot in Fall of 2006. One Piece's previous high mark in this timeslot was 13.0%, set (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-03-15/japan-animation-tv-ranking-march-1-7) on March 7. While other television programs (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-04-14/one-piece-anime-sets-record-tv-rating-of-13.8-percent#) has seen their ratings steadily drop in recent years, the top three anime series (Sazae-san (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=870), Chibi Maruko-chan (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=479), and One Piece) have largely maintained or even increased their ratings. From Fall of 2006 to Spring of 2009, One Piece's ratings largely stayed close to 10.0%. After publicity grew for the 10th One Piece film (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-05-11/one-piece-creator-oda-to-oversee-production-of-10th-film), television episode #421 earned (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-10-17/japan-animation-tv-ranking-october-5-11) a record post-move high rating (at the time) of 12.0% on October 11. Throughout last month, One Piece stayed at 11.9% or higher.
The 10th One Piece film (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-04-14/one-piece-anime-sets-record-tv-rating-of-13.8-percent#), One Piece Film Strong World (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10855), earned (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-02-25/toei-animation-raises-this-year-earnings-forecast) over 4.7 billion yen (about US$50 million) at the Japanese box office since it opened last December (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-12-14/10th-one-piece-film-tops-ponyo-opening-weekend). The 57th and latest volume of Eiichiro Oda (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=4639)'s original One Piece manga had a record 3-million-copy first printing (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-02-12/one-piece-no.57-manga-gets-record-3-million-print-run), and 2.17 million copies have been sold (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-04-07/japanese-comic-ranking-march-29-april-4) as of April 4.

I went to a store in town yesterday called Forbidden Planet. I remember going to it a few years back for Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon cards. I went in to see if it sold manga and behold it did. It had some One Piece. I think it had 6-10, 20-28, 30-37 and 40-44. They were selling for £7 though and you can get them on Amazon for £3 each. My friend bought Volume 3 of OP though cause he is collecting them and had some spare cash. They had a lot of stuff there like Naruto, Bleach, Haruhi, Death Note. All the popular stuff then some less known stuff. They didnt have Reborn! though :( - Anyway, I might go back sometime as they had posters but for manga I'm purchasing online. Far cheaper.

It seems like my 'where to buy anime and manga' thread I made a year or two ago was ineffective. :P

The Forbidden Planet I usually go to in Leicester Square has absolutely loads of manga. The whole downstairs is full of just comic books, graphic novels, anime and manga. The problem is, as you mentioned, everything costs a bomb. Thankfully they always have a halfprice manga section with a couple of odds and ends. Its where I bought Nodame Cantabile and some of Genshiken. The thing is they put like volume 4 or 5 in the halfprice section hoping you'll buy 1, 2 and 3 first. They're very scheming.

I gave up buying manga in shops when I spent like £100 on only 14 or so volumes. Websites like Amazon and The Book Depository are the best and only place to buy affordable manga. Although with that said I haven't actually bought any manga in months.

I'm watching an anime called Giant Killing based on Football. Started airing two weeks ago, its super cool. It has loads of English teams like Portsmouth and Fulham in it. Similar to Ippo and EyeShield. I'd advise anyone to watch it ;)

I never considered that, you're probably right though, I thought it was just Envy as Hawkeye, but then surely Envy would've shot Mustang straight away and got rid of him.

Awesome episode though, really tense with Envy being able to shape shift into either Mustang or Hawkeye, cos either can get tricked and both are great characters so if one of them gets hurt then I'll be pissed. Especially if they get killed by Envy or something... Hughes has already died to Envy, can't have another favourite character losing to the most annoying homunculus.

Meh, fans are probably just annoyed its over. How do they get those ratings anyway? Do fans fill in a survey or something or does the number actually represent the audience share? If its the latter then that rating is actually pretty good.

Southe,
21-04-2010, 10:37 PM
No idea all i know is theres japanese sites that put up ratings and such and thats where places like ANN get them from. No idea about the sites tho. but yea the ratings are quite interesting i liked to know where OP was ranking weekly but when i found out how badly bleach and Naruto do was quite happy. ^^

Overtime. Get me some extra money, and if i complain to the bank get some money returned to me. Need to buy Eva 1.11 and Paranoia Agent is getting a slim pack boxset release so be buying that and Gintama dvd.

Neversoft
21-04-2010, 11:00 PM
The 'ratings' are most probably audience share figures. It would make sense since they give you an average, as well as the channel the show was on, the time it was on and the duration. So, out of everyone watching television at 6:00pm, 3.9% of the viewers were watching Gintama. This may seem a small percentage, but out of everyone watching television 3.9% is a lot of people. Sazae-san must be pretty damn popular to get 20% audience share. That's Top Gear standards over here. Although it was a special so that is understandable.

Just did a bit of snooping as usual and I found that the light novels of the series are based on different characters from different time periods. This leads me to believe that the new series or perhaps it may even be an OVA is a new story on a different character. The date its set in is 2017. So far I havent been able to find a release date which leads me to believe that it will be released next year sometime, maybe this year. I dont really know, I'm assuming too much.

Ah, no way. Just found out that Dragonforce parted with their singer because of musical differences. Man, I loved Dragonforce. Espesically their new album. I think Chris liked them too. Damn, ZP was a great singer and tied the band together so much.

Have you forgotten? I'm not really a fan of Full Metal Alchemist. I actually came back to it last week but just couldn't get into it. I think I enjoyed Gintama so much that everything else just seems crap in comparison. There is still the movie to look forward to however, which I'm sure will exceed my expectations!

I know that I will not enjoy One Piece as much as I did Gintama, but alas I will continue with it because it does appear to be a great series. It can't compensate for my love for Gintama, however. :P Also, I know there is still the manga and I am currently reading the manga. Thats why I only said anime is not the same.

What are you basing that on? Also, this isn't the anime we're talking about, it's the novel.

Lol, the novel on the American Amazon website is $2,499 and sellers on ebay have started describing the first volume of the manga as rare and are charging over £20 for it.

Tokyopop really need to come out and say something. Is it out of print... is it not... they always have problems with their releases. People started assuming they dropped publication of Peace Maker Kurogane because we've been waiting for the third volume for so long. Aparrently they are still going to release it though.

Usually the popularity of the show equates to popularity in other forms of media relation such as manga, novels, OVAs and movies.

Ippo would probably fail over here, considering it is abnormally long, the topics covered are rather niche and it is quite old.

Why would Funimation even want to get the series from Geneon when the DVD sales were terrible. Even in Japan the DVDs for New Challenger underperformed. It's not easy money, its a loss of money. I'm not even sure Geneon still own the license anyway. Besides, Funimation can't just take over any series they take a liking to. The only reason they got many of ADVs titles in the past is because ADV went bankrupt and had to sell off all their assets.
