Graphic tips and tweeks for FS2004

Many of these tips will required editing your 'FS9.cfg' file. Please be advised that editing this file is not recommended and can rendor your FlightSim useless. Should you decide to edit this file, ALWAYS make a backup first! I take NO resposibility should any of these tweeks cause damage to your game, system, or hardware. *Note - Some tweeks are shown using Nvidia cards, so i can not verify if these work with anything else.

Where is the 'FS9.cfg' configuration file now located?


It will be located in your personal Application Data folder.
On Windows 2000/XP systems:
C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9\FS9.cfg
On Windows 9(x) systems:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9\fs9.cfg.
NOTE - The Application Data folder is hidden, so you will need to enable viewing of hidden files/folders under the Folder Options in your Explorer.

How can I improve the framerates even more?


Open your fs9.cfg file, and find the [GRAPHICS] header:
Look for 'TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD = X':
Change the current number (X) to any of the following:
1024 - high texture details (low FPS)
512 - high texture details (low FPS)
256 - medium texture details (medium FPS)
128 - low texture details (High FPS)
(The lower the number, the 'blurrier' the textures but the higher the framerates.
I use '256' for good performance.)
---Save the file and exit.--- How can I turn off the Flying Tips?

This option is located under the Realism settings on the primary Settings screen. Open the Realism window. It is a check box in the upper right.

Use Ms ultra high default setup:
-Set your clouds draw distant to 40 mil, clouds percentage to 90/100%, or with the lower slider at the bottom clouds density to MAX.
-Higher system, clouds draw distant more than to 40 mil, clouds percentage to 90/100%, clouds density to MAX. How can I change runway light settings?

Make this change to the fs9.cfg.

This is the highest value used to calculate the DEM radius
- TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19
This controls the DEM resolution:
18 = 150m DEM
19 = 75m DEM
20 = 37m DEM
21 = 19m DEM
- TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8
This controls the terrain texture size. Valid values are:
8 = 256x256
7 = 128x128
6 = 64x64

- TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=4
This controls the autogen density

This turns on/off the gradient map (cliffs).

Here's my setting I use for my Hawk panel which looks cool and is subtle at night:

Performance Boosts


-Enable T+L (transform and lighting)
This should increase your performance near 4 fps
-Antialasing
The Antialasing inside fs2004 will reduce your performance greatly. Uncheck (in display settings) in FS2004 and ONLY use the Antialasing from an external tweaker or from your driver display settings.

Better performance in 2d panel mode and others area.


By disabled the AGP Texture Acceleration, your performance will increase especially with 2d panels and other areas. (You will not nead to turn of the AGP Texture Acceleration under your DirectX, it's the same function inside fs9.cfg)
In your fs9.cfg under (DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X.0)
Mode=1024x768x32
TriLinear=1
TextureAGP=0 (<--- Add this line)
PanelAsTexture=0 (<--- *Add this line)
*Note - By adding the 'PanelAsTexture' line, your performance will even increase especially with 2d panels and 3rd party aircraft, but it may cause 2-d panels to 'blank-out' if you've enabled AA inside FS2004, so uncheck AA in fs2004, and enable AA from your prefered tweaker or your driver display setting.

I view the threads in this forum quite a lot and have decided I'd like to start playing FS2004. However, I'm getting a Mac with OS X for Christmas so I don't really want to buy Flight Simulator as it wouldn't work on OS X, so I was wondering if anybody could post a download link or torrent to download FS2004. I've already tried downloading it once, from the torrent "FS2004 - Repack by 108.iso", however it seems to be corrupt as the install always says there is missing scenery and the game doesn't start.

I view the threads in this forum quite a lot and have decided I'd like to start playing FS2004. However, I'm getting a Mac with OS X for Christmas so I don't really want to buy Flight Simulator as it wouldn't work on OS X, so I was wondering if anybody could post a download link or torrent to download FS2004. I've already tried downloading it once, from the torrent "FS2004 - Repack by 108.iso", however it seems to be corrupt as the install always says there is missing scenery and the game doesn't start.

This is the details of how I crashed:

Missed the runway, right wing hit a building and then I crashed into a tree. Not a happy way to go tbh.

Just did another flight and crashed again.. (Put my gear down at the wrong time and it got damaged so I tried to land with no wing and BOOOM!

Good thing: I landed on the runway.
Bad thing: I was landing with no wheels and everyone died.. yet again. :(

I've installed my UK2000 part 3 and 4 and wen i start off at a gate its the jetway isn't conected so then i do a shift + 2 to get the radio planel up and then at the bottom i click NAV1 so it comes on but then nothing happens i've opend my doors etc

Can you tell me what i need to do?

This is a strange one. Firstly, you don't need to open your doors to get it work. Have you tried it in a different aircraft? Are you on the T bar correctly? Which airport/airfield are you trying it at? Do you have the Parking Brake set when you switch NAV1?

You have to be at an gate which supports this feature, there are only about 10 gates at Manchester (Maybe not where your talking about but im using it as an example) that have moving jetways. Read the manual for information on airport specific "active" gates.

You can tell which gates are "active" on arrival as you will see 2 amber flashing lights on the board.

First im at Gatwick 2nd I stopped when the board says STOP I HAVE got my parking brakes set and when i was taxing the board had 1 green light on it

Not true. The active airgates can be activated using any NAV frequency, just click the NAV1 switch that is used to switch between frequencies and it should work. :)

Eye of a storm only refers to a Tropical Cyclone e.g a Hurricane or Tyhoon, as it was just a regular storm and I was in centre of it I refer to it as the 'heart'

Flaps must be set to full when landing (f8) But you must be slow enough so that the plane hasn't enough speed to gain lift.

As on the 24th October operations ceased on the Concorde, I have took a few shots of this amazing machine. More was going to come but Flight sim thought it was time to close and error, well done. Hope you like. The top shots are new ones and the bottom are some of my old.
