This Hogmanay, Scottish and Northern Ireland invite you to attend the 3rd ever Scottish TMA Real Ops starting at 3pm on Sunday 28th December. This event incorporates the three airfields of Edinburgh [EGPH], Glasgow [EGPF] and Prestwick [EGPK] as we attempt to recreate a real Sunday night within the Scottish TMA.
With over 250 available flights to book, to and from the TMA airfields, you really are spoiled for choice. Whether you choose to haul a packed 757 across Europe or a quick hope in a Twin Otter to the outer islands of Scotland, one thing is for sure, a great night guaranteed! (Or your money back )
Flights are available to book here: http://www.vatsim-uk.org/realops/index.php?ev=25
Of course - to fly out - you don't need to have booked it, but it would be a help to us.
See you on the Night!
-----------
We're now just over a week away from the event and just over half of the bookings have been swiped, so grab your flight before someone else does!!
See you in a week
Merry Christmas

Hello Flight Simmers,
This evening myself and Luke, thought it would be a good idea why not do a group flight on Vatsim during our Christmas Holiday. Of course we will need to plan this out with the following:
Route Date Time Whatever else
Basically, there will be about two requirements:
1. VATSIM, You must be able to fly on vatsim without any problems. This means flying on their with 'Air Traffic Control'. (Text/Voice, doesn't matter)(If they are online)
2. Be able to fly their aircraft on a planned route (way points and such).
3. Skype (Optional), we will most likely be all using skype to talk to each other during the flight.
If you have any suggestions/questions and so on, post them below.
We're looking for as many people as possible ;)

This is what I have planned for the group flight:
- London Heathrow to Lisbon (EGLL-LPPT)
Both airports have scenery, I suggest finding the Aerosoft links ;).
Time and date still need to be decided, so if you haven't already please vote in the other thread. :)
Edit; There is no restrictions on aircraft. As long as you can bloody fly the thing on a route. (We don't want pilots crashing into each other, as we may have ATC. :P)

Hey guys.
Just signed up so I can participate in this section! I used to play Habbo but no longer do. Decided to join a virtual airline (Fly UK) a few months ago after using FS for about a year or two now.
Anyway, I plan on staying active in this section!
A few hours ago, I flew to Princess Juliana Intl airport (ICAO: TNCM / IATA: SXM) with an Airbus A380 (freeware pah - plan on getting Wilco A380 soon). No A380 has landed at the notoriously short runway before at TNCM, so I guess my flight was a maiden one right. :P Anyhoo, got a few snaps of my approach and landing. For those who don't know, TNCM has a single runway (09/27) which is approximately 8000ft long - just capable of having heavy jets landing there. As it is short, it requires a slow and low approach over a stretch of water. Around the airport is Maho Beach, which is popular amongst tourists who travel there to see the jets (such as American Airlines 757s and KLM 747s) up close! There is no ILS equipment operating at TNCM, only a VOR station with DME. The approach itself mainly relies on visual awareness and making sure you can follow the approach plate!
On approach, the main landing gears of a heavy jet should cross the threshold at or slightly above 35ft agl, but there is a margin depending on the meterological conditions.
Here are the snaps of my approach and landing at TNCM!

Hoped you enjoyed the shots!
Thanks.

Hi,
I always see the threads from this forum and decided it would be fun to start/try Flight Sim. I have a few questions:
1. If your flight is like, 9 hours, do you actually have to sit there for 9 hours?
2. How do you know what to fly?
3. Is their a tutorial on how to fly when you start the game?
Thanks

Big headed much? Since 2 out of 3 didn't work. Then meh, something was up and two different tower controlling on and off, didn't help either!

I'm sure there is an autopilot and you shouldn't have to sit there for 9 hours!!!

Thats true.
You can usually pick any plane, just make sure it can hold enough fuel to get there.
Yes there is but not for the complex pmdg 747 etc

1. You can sit there for 9 hours if you want, or you can let Autopilot/FMC etc do it for you. Although you can always use the acceleration rate thing.
2. Fly anything you want from a small Cessna up to the large AN-225
3. There is like flying lessons type of thing you can do :)

Hey Xarea.
1. If your flight is like, 9 hours, do you actually have to sit there for 9 hours?
If your flight is usually considerably long, then you are able to speed up the flight up to 16 times normal speed with autopilot engaged. Usually, when flying an airliner, it will be autopilot which will be doing most of the flying for you. As autopilot will be in control, you can obviously just leave the game running and browse the internet or go somewhere. It is sometimes necessary to come back and check up on your flight because autopilot can be your worse enemy at times, so just checking on your flight path, fuel consumption and for any failures every 30-45 minutes is usually the best thing to do. For those long haul flights, I usually take off at 9/10pm, then do a check every 45 minutes up to midnight, then go sleep and when I wake up, I should be near to land.
2. How do you know what to fly?
There is a selection of default aircraft you can fly, from the light aircraft (Cessnas) to heavy jets (Boeings). There are also some aircraft used in the olden days, such as the Wright Flyer and Vickers Vimy. Then again, it depends if you buy FS2004 or FSX (FSX is the newest one but you must have outstandingly great computer specs for the best graphics and framerates). If there is a certain aircraft missing, then there is a high chance you can download it from the internet from a variety of websites to do with FS. Some websites charge you to download, whereas some websites don't. Payware is always more realistic than freeware, so if you're also looking for a touch of realism, go with the payware (PMDG, Level D, Wilco)... after you've learned about how to take to the skies!
3. Is their a tutorial on how to fly when you start the game?
Just by selecting a free flight, you will learn the basics of flight within the first 20 hours of playing by looking around on your own. There are also a number of excellent tutorials on the game by a real life flight instructor, Rod Machado. He will teach you about the cockpit instruments, some certain manuevers such as stalling, turning, climbing, descending and level flight and the basics of taking off, taxiing and landing. There are some more advanced tutorials by him as well, such as different approaches, how to navigate using your instruments and sudden failure to all engines. The best thing about the tutorials on Microsoft Flight Simulator is that you first read a tutorial, then you get to fly and Rod will teach you in the air. You will then have the chance to do a checkride, which is showing off the skills you have learnt. After you've learnt the basics, it is practice which will improve your flying on there. Don't try and be too impatient - if you cannot do something, then keep trying. It took me about 3 months to finally land on the runway properly. :P
There are also hundreds of websites with tutorials covering a range of issues. But try the tutorials in the game first. Once you are extremely happy with everything you have learnt, then you can improve on your knowledge by learning about reading charts and phraseology for air traffic control (there's a great thread about ATC phraseology in this section).
Best of luck!

Some great shots there too! Glad you had a great flight, despite the ATC troubles. I know what you mean with the ATC. One time, I was flying with the FS built in ATC and was on a final approach to Glasgow. I had lost one of the two engines and was "declaring an emergency" (even though that isn't possible with FS2004).
Suddenly, Glasgow tower cleared some Bombardier to take off from the runway I was landing at, meaning I had to then go around. However, I ignored ATC and landed anyway just as the Bombardier was rotating.

1) no, you can set the autopilot to fly for ya.
2) depends on how long the route is really.
3) yeahh although its BASIC.
As said above, you can set auto pilot then set speed up to 30% usual speed.. But its usually more entertaining flying without +speed.

Maybe the RAT is always down for that model, otherwise it should be adjustable by the flick of a switch on the overhead panel like Adam said.
The spoilers should be armed, but not down during approach. Air Canada Flight 621 lost speed and lift and eventually crashed due to having spoilers down during a low approach.

The RAT is a Ram Air Turbine, which is a small fan which (in most aircraft) drops below the fuselage. The RAT generates enough power to run some of the primary instruments, such as vertical speed indicator, airspeed indicator, altitude and attitude indicator.
They are only used in emergency situations, mainly when all engines flameout.

No aircraft would have a fixed RAT, not in this day in age anyway, it would simply cause more drag and be an annoyance to flight crew more than anything.
They can be up during final approach, but only in exceptional circumstances and only about 1/4 extended.
And RAT stands for Rat Air Turbine which creates minimal power should the aircraft loose all power.

Yep, but in Flight Simulator, the aircraft model may have a fixed RAT as some developers offer freeware models featuring non-retractable RATs. When it comes to FS, simulating forces like drag, weight, lift and thrust are not very realistic. :P

I'm wondering how many people can make it tomorrow? It will be mostly a morning departure say around 10:00/10:30. I was also thinking of doing:

What are decent specs to run FS2004? I just got a Radeon X1650 512mb 128 bit graphics card today which runs great, I also got an ok processor and 1.25gb ram :)
Would it work?
